About
Visit The Kon-Tiki Museum and be inspired by Thor Heyerdahl! See the original balsa wood raft from 1947 and the Oscar-winning film from 1951! The museum houses original boats and artifacts from Thor Heyerdahl's world-famous expeditions such as the original Kon-Tiki balsa raft which crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947 and the original reed boat Ra II which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1970. Both exhibitions have separate children storylines. The Kon-Tiki Museum also houses one of the most comprehensive exhibitions about Easter Island in the world, including a replica of a family cave from Easter Island. Underneath the Kon-Tiki raft is a special underwater exhibit that is fun for kids. Cinema screening the original Kon-Tiki documentary movie (Oscar for best documentary in 1951) every day at 12:00. Great museum shop. Free with Oslo Pass. A must when visiting Oslo!

    Fantastic museum
Easily reached by route 30 bus from National theatre stop next to the metro exit which stops yards from the entrance. This museum is dedicated to the life and works of Heyerdahl and it features the boats from the Kon tiki expedition along with the Ra expedition. Signs in various languages describes how a journey deemed as impossible was possible - the project was rediscovering skills that had long been forgotten. Try to get there before noon as the cinema shows the documentary about the Kon tiki expedition. It made me realise how challenging it was but yet it was a game changer in exploration.
Thank you so much for your visit, Robert!

    Very interesting museum
Yet another fun museum within easy reach of Oslo. This one is right across the road from the Fram Museum and well worth a visit, particularly if you have bought the Oslo card. Both the Kon-Tiki and Ra 2 rafts are here and are quite amazing to see. Lots of interesting photos, and information surround the major displays. I knew of, but did not know much about, the Kon-Tiki expedition, but have been inspired to learn more since visiting this museum.

    Fascinating museum
The history of the Kon-Tiki and the explorer Thor Heyerdah is fascinatingly told in this museum, made even better by being able to get up close to the boat as well as the Ra II. It was well laid out and structured with a variety of exhibits to see including a couple of interesting videos. I particularly liked how the museum had created a separate set of information boards just for kids!

Truly one of a kind museum…focused on the explorations of Thor Heyerdahl. The museum is open every day from 9:30 am to 6 PM and while it attracts crowds as you would expect, it really is one of a kind…profiling the multiple incredible sailing adventures that Heyerdahl took in four different man-made rafts made of balsa wood or reeds and the stunning trips he took with all four craft. Also a fine profile of the documentary that was made of the first voyage and the Academy Award winning movie that gained the award in the early 1950s. Plus the super amount of details about Easter Island and a replica of one of the caves (family?) on the Island. This museum is so unique…you must make time if you are in Oslo. Truly memorable for all ages.

We took ferry from Oslo to come here. It is located just opposite famous Fram Museum. It is about boats and daring expeditions to different islands. The documentary was interesting.
Worth visiting...

Next door to famous Fram museum is the Kon-Tiki museum featuring another of Norway's daring explorers. Thor Heyerdahl was the driving engine behind the well-known Kon-Tiki and Ra expeditions.

In contrast to the Fram explorers' meticulous preparations, Heyerdahl's expeditions seem improvised and reckless. But he did succeed in making his theories of Pacific Ocean colonization from South America plausible by drifting 101 days in a rickety balsa ship to reach remote islands in the Pacific. Having done that in 1947, he continued to test new theories in 1970 using Atlantic Ocean currents to travel in a raft from Morocco to Barbados.

In later days, Heyerdahl became known for his activism to combat oceanic pollution.

The margin between success and disaster was razor thin for Heyerdahl. In all his recklessness he deserves admiration for his willingness to risk it all for something he believed in.

The attraction is to see these amazing boats and to read about the voyages of Thor Heyerdahl. Everything was clear and the timelines were easy to follow. The information about Heyerdahl's other expeditions were also interesting and well presented. A small museum, but a great presentation.

I spent a pleasant hour here, learning about the expeditions to the islands. I didn’t have time to watch the film, because I mis-judged how interesting I would find it and it’s not in an ideal place to visit unless you take either the open topped bus, public transport or your own transport.

I was only vaguely aware that he had undertaken a second expedition. I was slightly disappointed that the shop didn’t have many models of job tiki, but had many, many models of the raft that (SPOILER ALERT) sank. I would quite happily go back.

Fascinating museum containing the Kon Tiki and Ra which Thor Heyerdal and his crew did some amazing travel with. The museum is really interesting and you get a good picture of the journeys.

Well, an interesting museum. Contains original artefacts from the Kon Tiki expedition, and 2 other expeditions.

Lots of material on Easter Island, and an interesting cave to walk through.

But having been to Fram Polar Expedition earlier where the detailed planning of Roald Amundsen and his amazing organisational ability ensured the success of his extreme expeditions, and returning safely, I found that Thor Heyerdahl's seemingly haphazard approach frustrating. How can he have hired folk who had never even sailed before!! He did show a possible link between the Peruvians and the Egyptians.

You can buy a ticket for all 3 museums.

Thank you so much for visiting us! The Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947 was a result of the theory Heyerdahl had been pondering ever since his stay on Fatu Hiva in 1937. He recruited well-qualified men and made the six men world famous. However, it was a woman, Gerd Vold Hurum, who was key in organizing the expedition and kept the reins on shore. She was the secret 7th member of the planning of the expedition!

My wife and I visited the Kon-Tiki museum while in Oslo for a four-day side-trip from Stockholm. We paid a total 500 NOK for a two-museum pass (with the Fram Museum across the street). We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday and stayed a bit less than an hour. It wasn’t very busy, but many of the display/viewing areas are quite narrow and I can imagine it can feel crowded when it is busy. That said, they maintain a pretty good directional flow of visitors, so there aren’t people crossing back-and-forth in different directions.

The Kon-Tiki raft is the centerpiece of the exhibit, with the story and other artifacts/memorabilia posted around it. There is plenty to read (including in English) to learn the background to the story and understand how the expedition progressed.

The Ra II is also on display, but by the time we got to it, we had seen almost as much as we wanted to see, and we still had the Fram Museum to digest, so we didn’t stay and read nearly as much. Later that evening, we found the Academy Award-winning Kon-Tiki documentary on line and watched it.

We took our time and learned a ton. I never appreciated how intrepid Thor Heyerdahl and his five mates were! Talk about a leap of faith. The museum has the original raft, great info, and the Ra II raft. I’m not sure if kids would much like this, as it is reading/info heavy unless the parents are VERY enthusiastic. As an adult, I enjoyed this a lot.

The Kon Tiki museum is right next to the Nautical Museum and the Fram. Both are worth visiting. They are an easy and pleasant ferry trip from City Hall.
