Secluded but not for the unfit or sand lovers

We’ll I should have paid more attention to the recent reviews! Getting there was easy and managed to get a space in the car park (only enough space for 4/5 cars). There’s then a steep walk down to the “beach” which is probably around a 20-25% slope). Others have mentioned about a ride up and down for a couple of Euros, however don’t expect it to be available as we found out. The beach itself is very secluded and quiet but and it’s a big but - there is no sand and the swimming area is rocky. Having said all that our little boy had fun stacking stones but the sea was way too dangerous for him to venture in to

Stormy waters

San Blas beach is a former shadow of itself. A storm carried away all the sand and deposited rocks. We went with high hopes but were faced with a rocky walk to reach the end of the beach which was the only flat space but it was hardened clay. The water was warm but the beach is to be avoided if you want a relaxing sandy beach. Perilous is one word I would use to describe the walk along the rocky beach. We were still able to pay for the lift to the small parking area at the top of the steepest of hills. Parking for cars is limited to approx 5 cars.

If you want to sunbathe and swim in the sea but you don't like sand - this is a place to go! It's a very calm place and we loved it!

San Blas Beach beauty

San Blas is a sandy beach not very big but beautiful and secluded beach where you can go there relax and have a swim or sit there in the sun without interruptions or cars passing by,

Quite a hike to the beach!

Sandy beach, great sunset, fun-filled shore
The restaurant manager offered me a whole meal for less price as I didn't have enough cash and they don't accept card payments!
Good spot for chilling by yourself!

Apparently this was a sandy beach until a storm in early 2019 washed away all the sand. Who needs sand? If you are looking for a quiet and tranquil view of the med then this is the place to go.

You can park above the beach (bus stop is also nearby). The walk down to the beach is fairly invigorating but worth it for the views and photo opportunities. If you suffer in the heat the walk back up won't be much fun though.

Once you do finally get to the bottom there is a small Bar/Cafe with an extremely friendly and helpful local guy running it. For 10 Euros he does fresh mussels in a garlic and wine sauce (with a little cheeky chilli in there). These would not be out of place on an expensive restaurant menu and sitting meters from where the waves from the Med are breaking against coastal rocks generates a setting that is genuinely enchanting.

If you are planning a visit to Gozo I heartily recommend a visit here.

This picturesque bay was one of my favorite beaches to go to. The last storm brought in a lot of big stones and boulders so there isn’t much sand to sit and sunbath. It has a very steep climb down to the sea which is difficult to climb up. There is transportation up and down for $2 each way which is worth it on leaving if you’re not the fitness. There is a little cafe to get food and drinks and the gentleman that runs it is super nice.

Great little spot, shame about all the rocks

My friend and I took a late afternoon stroll down to San Blas as it was somewhere I didn't get chance to visit during my stay in 2015.

Access to the beach area is via a very steep hill, but there's a jeep available (for a small fee) that will collect you from the top and return you afterwards - look out for the A-frame board at the top of the hill for the details. Needing the exercise after MANY large portions of Maltese food over the past week, we parked the car at the top and walked down. And walked back up. Thankfully the main heat of the day had passed, as it would have been tough going in 30C+ temperatures.

When we reached the bottom, we were greeted with the view of a gorgeous little bay, crystal clear waters, a beach hut café, and stones and rocks.

Not sure if it was due to the time of day, but there were less than 10 people in the area so it was nice and relaxing to just sit and listen to the waves rolling in, and watching the water. As you'd expect, some people were swimming/snorkelling, others were just laid out or sitting on the stoney beach. Sun loungers were placed a bit further round on a flattish piece of rock and this was vacant when we arrived so we headed for that part.

The walking route towards the further part (where the sun loungers were) wasn't flat as the rocks had to be negotiated. Thankfully they were the kind of rocks you could actually get a decent grip on so the risk of slipping was minimal.

It looks like the storm earlier in the year also washed away some of the earth towards the back of the beach as tree roots were exposed. Whilst walking alongside part of this embankment, some soil fell onto my head and down my back - so just be mindful of this in case there's a landslip.

A bar/café was prepping for a BBQ from 1830hrs which could've been fun (we had other plans so couldn't partake).

Looking forward to going back down another time and spending the day there.

A shame the storm took the beach
Aug 2019 • Family
Such a shame for the business owners in the bay, the sand has all been washed away from a storm in February 19, we walked along the rocks to the furthest point of the bay with flat rock. Was a lovely swim but obviously without the sand was a totally different experience

No sandy areas left after storm in Feb 2019
Aug 2019 • Family
Visited Aug 2019 and discovered the ‘beach’ had disappeared. Locals told us a storm ruined it earlier in the year. A mass of rocks now lie where the sand beach was making it treacherous to walk over.

If you are adventurous and happy to deal with this it might be worth a look, but if you have young children or difficulty walking over rocks etc avoid it.

A real shame.
