Us adults loved it, everything about the museum was very interested and we learnt a lot from it. but our toddler didn't enjoy it as he was too young to have the headphones on (headphones are given when you arrive) and there wasn't much there...More

It is a visit that you don't master. You have to follow the rythmn imposed by the too numerous audio or video presentations. The first part is interesting about the business around whales huntings in Madeira that only ceased in 1981 (unbelievable it lasted that...More

If you are planning on visiting this museum, please be aware that it’s main.y a celebration of Caniçal’s whaling history. Whilst I fully appreciate that it was part of the island’s economic and social history, it did sit uneasily with me. The exhibits themselves are...More

This museum was very nice surprise. We can learn all sorts of things about wales: since Wale Physiology to the Story of whale hunting in Madeira. The museum is well suited for young children using imerssive technologies and multi-lingual translation. A must visit.

The museum is divided into two parts - the first concerns the history of whaling in the area and the second focuses on the species. Both are interesting and make full use of the interactive headsets. There were separate tours for children. The museum is...More

As an exercise in making a little go a long way, this museum excels. There are only so many times that you can hear that the Madeiran whalers led a dangerous existence but through their skill and bravery none of them died. Similarly after the...More

The museum offers audio guides for every visitor in multiple languages, with special versions of the text adapted for children (very practical when the family members are fluent in different languages). The whale hunting part is somewhat special, though still interesting. The second part of...More

10:30-18:00, all days except Mondays. Plan to enter at least 60 minutes before closing time (though 90-120 gives you more peace of mind, in case you happen to like one part of the exhibit more).
