The wife and I went on a long weekend trip to the Vestmannaeyjar island. It was on a relatively short notice but heard about this company that usually arranges tours for larger parties. They were wonderful, owners Auðurand Gunnar Ingi, got us a very resonable price for 2 nights at a 2 star hotel that was clean and centrally located. They also offered a guided 90 min tour around the new lava field from the eruption in 1973. The giude, Unnur, was very knowledgeble being an islander, and gave us insight into the lives of the locals before, during and after the eruption. After the walk we rented bikes from them and did a circle tour around the island and ended a fantastic day by doing a rib boat ride around the island that they also arranged. Very professional and fun. Highly recommended

We booked a private tour and the guide was incredibly accommodating. She worked around our limited ferry schedule and took us around the island while telling us great stories that only a local would know. When we started the tour I mentioned that I'd like to take a little hike as part of it and she moved around the trip to let us do a hike to the top of the volcano. The tour company helped make our trip to the island wonderful!

We LOVED our tour with locals Thora and Andre! They tailored the experience to our interests and included several stops that we wouldn't have known to ask about. Our adult children (19 and 23) enjoyed it as much as we did. They got to try out the Westman islands sport of Sprangen! We saw the Herjolfsdalur area where the National Festival is held, and visited the Herjolfstown recreation of the first Viking home in Iceland. They knew the best spot to see puffins, and introduced us to the other bird species (also wonderful, if not quite as charismatic) that populate the island, the kittiwake and Gille-mots. We also got a guided tour of the Sea Life Trust Beluga conservatory and puffin hospital! Along the way, our guides shared many personal stories about growing up on the island and about their families' experience after the eruption of 1973. We enjoyed it so much, we all agreed that we could have spent several more hours happily exploring the island with them. We understand now that one day is definitely not enough, and we hope to return one day!! Thank you, Thora and Andre!! If you are ever visiting Chicago, we'd love to return the favor!

Our group of five friends had an amazing tour guide (his name was Gunnar--we booked the private tour with a local) who was an islander. He provided a personalized tour of the island, including opportunities to see and feed the sheep, and visits to a variety of beautiful sights around the island interwoven with stories about what it was like to live and grow up there. He was 6 years old during the 1973 volcano eruptions and described what it was like for him and others living on the island. If you want to understand more about the island history and culture this is not to be missed. He was super friendly, relaxed, and down to earth, and it was a pleasure to spend time with him and to have him share his love of his home.

We had such a great experience on Viking’s 2 hour private tour around Vestmannaeyjar. It was our local guide’s first tour on her own. Normally that might concern a group but instead this turned out to be one of the favorite moments of our trip around Iceland. Our guide Lyntha (sorry for the misspelling) was so friendly and knowledgeable and told us great, personal stories about the island. She was great with the kids who had so much fun visiting Puffins, Elephant Rock, and the volcano. She also recommended the local whale rescue where we went afterwards. By the end we were taking photos together, sharing our favorites movies and bands and really felt like we had a unique, personal experience on the Westmann Islands. This is the type of fun, memorable experience you hope for on vacation!

We had an excellent tour arrange by our cruise ship. The guide was well-informed and funny. We went to great scenic areas and the big volcano museum, which was fascinating and the highlight. Saw a lot in a few hours. Puffin watching.

An amazing fun RIB boat ride. They take you around the islands, talk about the bird life, take you into small caves on the side of the islands, talk about the area. All in a RIB boat. The guide CJ made the experience fun and with the music playing in the boat made it a special, one of our most memorable experiences

This was a FABULOUS experience. Our guide really knows the island, having been born and raised there, and clearly loves where she lives. She was funny, insightful, and delightful company. We can’t recommend this experience enough to anyone visiting the island. It is the very best way to get a sense of place and it’s people. :)

A walk around the Westman Islands with a Viking tour guide is definitely worth a walk. Personal insights and stories that touch people. I recommend the Viking tour.

Viking tours has some amazing people like Audur and her husband. We were in tour of Iceland for 10 days and they were driving us around Iceland from Hallmark Tours and travel. Great personality and safe driving. We had lots of fun with Audur specially all kids enjoy her company. Audur and her husband were always smiling. Nice and clean bus with comfortable seat in bus. If we ever go to Iceland, we definitely book Viking tours specifically Audur.

I’m interested in the circle tour but the website will not work for me. I’ve been trying for months now. Can you help me book a trip in June or lead me in the direction to do so?

Are whale watching tours offered in March? We're considering a stay in Hella and we're mapping out area options for day-time activities (milking the 5-6 hours of daylight!). Thank you!

Dear Melanie.
Maybe this answer is coming a little bit to late. Unfortunately we do not offer boat tours in March.
Best regards

Has anyone done the trip out to Surtsey? If so, could you provide some input on your tour? How long is it? Is the water rough? Is it worth the time? I would love to see the island. Do the guides speak in English? I know that tourist are not allowed but I would love to see the island from a far.

I've done the circle tour which is a scenery and bird watching tour. I know Viking also offers a 3.5 hour tour which goes near the various Westman Islands (looking for bird life which is spectacular in Iceland) and ends up getting as close to Surtsey as is allowed. The guides do speak English and provide a lot of great information. However, be forewarned that, yes, the seas can be moderately rough to really rough. If it's too rough they'll cancel the tour for safety sake. I've been on numerous boat tours in Iceland from various ports and it's always been pretty choppy (plus the fact that these tour boats are small adds to the motion). If motion sickness is a huge concern then I'd skip the boat activities and do land based tours. Or take meds well in advance of boarding the boat to help with the motion.

Viking tours offers a number of possibilities. Since we will be arriving by cruise ship, I'm not sure we really want to take a boat trip around the island. However, you mentioned a historical tour with Alfred which might be of more interest to us.
I didn't see a reference to that tour on their website. Could you clarify .. what is the exact name of that tour and some details about it would be appreciated. Thank you.
