About
Luostarinmäki is the only continuous district of wooden houses that survived the fire of 1827 in Turku. These houses are over 200 years old and still standing in their original building sites. The houses have been furnished as craftsmen’s homes and workshops, representing over 30 different trades. The museum tells the story of pre-industrial urban craftsmanship. In the summertime craftsmen come to work in the workshops.
The museum is open during summer from May to August, and for the Christmas Season in December.

- Janka KBrno, Czech Republic6,340 contributionsReserve at least a half a day and emplore historical craftsmanshipsThis is truly hipster place, worth of at least half a day visit, if not the whole day visit. I didn't know that, arrived 1,5 hours before the closing time, and managed to explore up to 5 houses. Every building presents some craftsmanship from the past, with a lot of examples. Sometimes there are people that work at the place, presenting their craftsmanship directly to the visitors. A lot of information is written on the information tables, but you can use also audio guide scanning QR codes placed at the information tables.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2023
- RYC88Centreville, Virginia1,278 contributionsUnique display of Turku's pastIt's such a unique display of the section of the city that survived the horrible fire of 1827. All the wooden buildings are around little courtyards and they are adorable. There are so many workshops and businesses, everything from bookbinding to shoemakers to tinsmiths. There was so much information about the people who lived in the houses, since they have the written accounts, and then information about all the trades and the history of Turku. Learning not only the history of Turku, but finding out that people lived here until just recently was fascinating. There were lots of things for kids to do, with interactive displays and just running around the village. It was very interesting.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 July 2023

A couple things really stood out - the ceramic model at the entrance with excellent information for both sighted and vision-impaired visitors. Also, the wooden tablets in each building with concise information about the particular craft and about the actual individuals who lived and worked there. This reflected the amount of research that must have gone in to creating this museum, and it gives a real sense of the fact that this was a real neighbourhood with real people living in it.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 September 2023

Very interesting and cohesive museum area with a lot of places to visit and learn about the different trades and how the people doing them lived. Would definitely recommend to people visiting Turku and interested about history!

Well done and well preserved. We spent about 2 hours here and went in every house. Really enjoying seeing and learning about the different crafts.

This museum has lots of stories to tell! The collection of 14 houses (each with several rooms and entrances) captures the life of many people who actually lived in this area in the 19th and 20th century.
Small wooden tablets with texts in Finnish, Swedish and English give a generic introduction to a particular profession (e.g. carpentry, saddle making, etc.) as well as a personalized story about an individual who lived in this area. There are also several nice video displays.
Some houses are manned by people dressed in time-appropriate dress and with knowledge about the particular display. Language skills vary a lot, but the displays themselves tell most of the story.
Unusually, Google maps didn't lead us straight there, but look for the crossing of Klostergatan and Vårdbergsgatan and you will see the entrance to the museum area from there.

Interesting area, the only one that was saved in the big fire a long time ago. Very interesting to see how people used to live and work in the past.

I visited here almost 30 years ago and now again and wasn't disappointed. All those charming small cottages, nice history and beautiful sunshine. What more can you expect? If you like this kind of history, don't miss the place. Only thing I missed: there was a guide who spoke only a little bit Finnish and answered all our questions wrong. She was kind, but didn't understand our questions.

Luostarinmäki Museum Quarter is the only unified wooden house area in Turku that survived the 1827 Turku fire. The old district with its craftsmen was located on the outskirts of the city and was spared from the fire.
It is a miracle that the more than 200-year-old buildings are still standing in their original locations. The area has been spared from rebuilding. So the alleys, courtyards, and homes form a unique milieu.
As the name says, the area is located on a hill. It was a very warm summer day on our visit. We were already sweating as we finally reached the museum. There are many stairs to the numerous buildings. So we visited only half of the buildings.
We have visited many similar museums here in Finland. In that sense, the museum offered nothing new.

We happened to walk by this museum and decided to go and ask if it was possible to visit. Due to Covid19 restrictions a visit to the museum should have been booked in advance but we were told that we can visit if we keep the visit short.
The area is very interesting and it’s amazing that so many old buildings are still standing. It felt like a trip back in time. It was nice to see how people used to live and all the an old tools etc.
