Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser. The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides. Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku. Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

My wife and I traveled on this wonderful attraction last Tuesday. The weather was cloudy but fine and we had the side-flaps rolled up on the rail carts. The operation was pleasantly yet professionally run by the two ladies on duty with a number of...More

A credit to the Mamaku community. Despite wet conditions, we thoroughly enjoyed this quite unique attraction. Also inspired us to see a piece of NZ Rail history being resurrected with such innovation.

Good bit of fun, especially when it’s raining - they have wipers! Not a high speed or extreme activity- just a leisurely trundle through farm and bush on a restored track. The rail ‘cars’ are GPS controlled- you really don’t need to do anything except...More

We thoroughly enjoyed this relaxing, auto driven, drive through the countryside. The stray duck and chicken on the tracks added to our excitement with the honking of our horn to move them on. With clear side flaps to block cold air and rain and blankets...More

A most enjoyable experience. Well designed jiggers, and despite many other parties the separation made them unnoticeable. Well done Railcruising, all the best for the future.

A really enjoyable trip. Mostly automated drive but some work to do when stopping. The railcruiser travels a considerable distance through a variety of terrain with amazing views. A truly unique experience and great value.

I really enjoyed my trip on the rail car, looking at the scenery as it travelled across the countryside. It rained by the railcar was enclosed so it was not a problem. An electronic guide came on and explained things at various points on the...More

We chose to do this tour for my son who loves trains. Admittedly we didn’t research it much and we expected to actually be able to drive the cart ourselves. We also didn’t expect to pay $190 for 3 people. The scenery was lovely and...More
