Very good thoughful design of museum building, and moreover of the expositions. It is not overcrowded with exhibits, the have proper lighting, and good amount of explanations. Some are very impressive, more so in total. The dates of icon paintings seem questionable, though

The layout and curation of the museum lend a hand in helping the visitor to understand Byzantium and its place in history, artistically, religiously and socially as well as geographically. Give yourself a good hour at least to stroll through.

I was fortunate to visit this museum with a very professional guide. I don't know if the museum offers guided tours, but if it does it may be helpful in order to pick the cherries from this rich collection. It spans the period from the...More

Visited this beautiful museum on a trip to Thessaloniki, it is really fascinating. In the winter months it closes at 16.00 so an early start is advised but well worth the effort. We didn’t bring the teenagers as they have limited museum capacity.

I enjoy visiting museums. This one has an angle which revealed some previously misunderstood aspects of Greek-Roman interactions from the perspective of Eastern Christianity. The importance of Macedonian region to the history of Europe does not often feature in English-language sources. Western Christianity focussed narrative...More

This the most impressive museum of Thessaloniki with an anormous collection of very valuable pieces of art. We loved this place most of all the historic sites in the city.

Great place to visit. We went on a weekday (Wednesday) and it was virtually empty. The history of Thessaloniki laid out in chronological order. My only complaint was that the museum shop didn't have any guides in English.

One realizes the centrality of Thessaloniki to the history of today's Greece and beyond. It makes the city one of Europe's best kept tourism secrets.
