Wonderfully restored/maintained Byzantine/Ottoman fortification. Lovely alleys, flowers and gardens, terraces and labyrinth passages leading to the Municipal Museum and the Ic Kale castle areas (where the Byzantine Museum is located).

The castle is a fortified town with an inner castle (around the Fetinhe Mosque). The main area is very much inhabited, with a maze of little streets. It is free to enter and, in June, did not seem at all touristy.

Entering one of the gates transfers us in romantic time & space, though this an opinion by modern tourists and it surely deviates from the impression of the real inhabitants in earlier cruel ages. Ali Pasha, the Albanian local ruler, sealed the place by his...More

It looks like a much smaller scale of the buildings in Gjirokastra, Albania. I could imagine that they are both constructed or maintained under the regime of Ottoman empire therefore similar in style. However, I visited Gjirokastra first so this castle is quite less impressed...More

Unfortunately only very few owners have kept the old architecture alive. Having recently been to Rhodes, I was expecting to see a lot of 19th century architecture within walls. Instead, most buildings have been replaced by square/bland buildings... Quite a disappointment!

Breathtaking, view, the catle takes you back 300 - 400 years . A visit is a must to understand how life was during this period.

Amazed by the castle. Very quiet and peaceful here, excellent place to take a walk, drink some coffee and relax. If they had cleaned the walls from the ugly sprays would be even better.
