The ruins of a fort or castle for defense. It has spectacular views. There is parking and and a cafe at the base. The climb is mild to moderate but can be slippery. Decent shoes are needed.

Around an hours drive from the old town on a straight road all the way to Monolithos castle. Park on the side of the road for free. Steps all the way up, be careful the shiny rocks are very slippy. There's a little church at the top, we lit some candles for family and the views are breathtaking. Well worth a drive and a visit. It was beautiful.

We go there more for the view than the castle as it is really only ruins and small ones.

The walk is very easy, not even 10mn.

The view from the Top is very nice and you can walk around to take nice pictures from all directions.

You have a small shop near by to enjoy some snacks and drinks

You can also continue the road as there is a small beach there in the extreme West Coast.

Magnificent views of the Aegean sea from castle ruins on mountain in SW Rhodes.
Just a short hike will get you to the castle and the small monastery of St. George. The castle was built by the Knights of St. John.

Not the most significant ruins to visit, but the view from the top are simply amazing and well worth the 10/12 minute climb up steps and a little rubble, so good footwear required. Monolithos, meaning single rock, stands proud on the south west coast line and well worth a visit. No fees involved and stunning views of the coast line.
Also a small chapel at the top within the castle ruins.

This is a ruin of a medieval castle with a working bell and a chapel at the top. The climb is up ancient stone steps and bit uneven (be careful if you have bad knees!). We timed our visit for sunset and it well worth it. Since we were there in the "shoulder season" it was very windy! Plan accordingly. It was a beautiful way to end the day (we spent the few hours before sunset at Fourni Beach which is a steep drive down about 10 minutes.)

Absolutely stunning. We rented a car and drove out here. Had ice-cream in the little cafe by the car park, and walked up after that. Its stunning up there. Absolutely Gorgeous views and well worth going up.

Lovely setting and brilliant views. We were there for about 10 minutes as there's not much else to do. Roadside parking at the bottom, then a few minutes of not very challenging uphill walk to the castle.

Was it worth the almost 90 minute drive from Rhodes town? Not really sure. What really got to me was the VERY tedious journey due to the 50kph speed limit (and sometimes as low as 30kph). Most of this is on the open west coastal road so there are often long stretches where there are no houses in sight. If this was the UK, I'd expect it to be at least 50mph.

I think I now understand how tractor drivers feel!

We did stop by at the pretty Sianna village on the way.

The location of the castle ruins, atop a high rock with a little white church at the centre and the sea behind is stunning. I doubt anyone would be able to resist a few photographs.

There is also one of the few opportunities on the island to take a 5 mile circular walk down and around the coast and back. Easy downhill but be prepared for a relatively steep climb back, some of which is quite rocky. Took us 1 and three quarter hours.

Park near the base of the walk up to the ruins, opposite the cafe
