Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Still a lovely family beach for anyone staying east of Ierapetra. Please beware of reviews mistakenly placed here for another beach of the same name in the Peloponnese, which has nothing to do with this beach on the island of Crete! There are no trains, trams, or cruise ships here!
Further away from Ierapetra where the sunbeds start the entry to the water is rocky which makes it harder to get in, but at the first part of the bay the bottom is sandy and very easy to walk in. This part also has ample trees for shade.

In the past couple of years (2022, 2023) it seems that some fish that like to nip have moved into this little patch of water which makes the beach less ideal for gentle dipping and paddling although snorkelling is still fine. We still see plenty of locals here but perhaps the fish only like the taste of tourists? Hopefully the biting ones will disappear again over the next year or 2.
Please also note that a number of other reviews and photos are of a completely different beach, and that others are for the same stretch of beach but are much further along (east - away from Ierapetra). The best part for shelter and snorkelling is the part just beyond the Petra Mare hotel where there is a rocky outcrop. The beach here has good sand for sandcastles and has a very gentle slope into the water ideal for young and less confident swimmers. Further along (away from Ierapetra) the entry to the water is often over rock layers which can be slippery, and the waves further along can also be bigger. There are no cafes or sunbeds on the part of the beach near the western end these are several hundred metres to the east.
Parking used to take place at the side of the road but this is now likely to get you a ticket so most people now park on gravel/dirt informal car parks off either side of the road. The west most of these is on the opposite side of the road to the sea, and then 500m further east along the road there are some more on the sea-side of the road near the sunbeds and food outlets.

Our cruise ship arrived Katakolon in the morning. Instead of going to Olympia, we took a colourful tourist train through the countryside. It only cost 6 Euro. We stopped at the pretty Mercouri vineyard and tasted the local wine which was very nice in a pleasant gardens. We then carried on with the train to lovely St. Andreas Beach. When we arrived, we had cappuccino overlooking the beautiful surroundings. We felt very relaxing with sea air. I highly recommend this place.

It is not a must-see location, but it is interesting.
Easy access along the road.

Interestingly dark-coloured sand, underwater rocks shaped by the waves.
You could imagine a sense of closeness to Africa - afterall, it is the Libyan Sea.

Also Ierapetra itself has an altogether different feel than other towns in Crete, at least in our eyes.

Couple of small bars / hotels with private beaches, not golden sands but so so peaceful. Water clear and warm and use of beds for a small purchase. Fantastic

Rocky beach, chairs in short supply but free when available. Good restaurant above and well used by locals and other travelers

Holidaying in Stalis on the North coast of Crete, but due to clouds and wind early in the season we drove over to the South coast chasing the sun.

This beach is OK but it certainly wouldn't be my first choice and I'm sure there are better ones in the area. Course dark gritty sand interspersed with stone and shells, so not very feet friendly coupled with a severe shelf drop off into deep water make this a not very child friendly location. There a several shops and restaurants close by with limited free parking.

We go to Crete pretty much every summer without fail. Whilst in Ierapetra our regular beach is Agios Andreas, just past the Petra Mare hotel to the east or Ierapetra. There is easy on-road parking, plenty of trees at the back of the beach for shelter and a rocky outcropping which provides a sheltered little bay and good snorkelling. You will see many of the local families here. There is also a free fresh-water shower on the beach
