Plaka
About
Wander through the narrow cobblestone alleys of this neighborhood at the foothills of the Acropolis. You'll find quaint shops selling jewelry, clothes, ceramics, and souvenirs, plus sidewalk restaurants and family-run taverns serving authentic Greek food. Being one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens, you’ll be able to see Roman columns, medieval churches, and ancient landmarks like the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. The area gets busy, especially during summer, so visit in the early morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds. Explore Plaka and the nearby landmarks on a guided tour of Athens—it will typically include the Acropolis, Parthenon, and other ancient temples and museums. – Tripadvisor

The area
Neighbourhood: Plaka
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.

    Feels a Little Surreal
Honestly, it took me a little while to get used to some of the things that are done in Greece but once I did, I loved it. The Plaka is a wonderful area. Feels a little surreal to be walking around, shopping, eating, with the beautiful Acropolis looming above. We were just there. The last couple of days began to get VERY busy. Lots of people to walk around, get nudged by, etc. but we still enjoyed it. All of the people we encountered in the service area, from sales to restaurant staff, were extremely pleasant and helpful. I hope to have the opportunity to visit this area again.

    Wonderful atmosphere
Visited Plaka en route up to the Acropolis (and the Parthenon). Always busy with its narrow streets filled with shops, cafes and restaurants. There is always such a unique atmosphere here (as have visited before), full of history and charm. We also stopped here for lunch which was great. Although generally a safe area, as it is very busy please be mindful of your personal belongings when walking around this area, though we had no issues.

    Shopping Mecca
Plaka is a great place to find a hotel, because it's conveniently located. There are plenty of places to shop in the area that won't break the bank. One word of warning!!! There will be pick pockets in the crowds. They will find some unsuspecting tourist to steal from, so be careful that it isn't you.

    Love this place
I had been there 25 years ago - my first visit to Greece. So fun, poking around the shops, and stopping for drinks and food along the way. This time it was just as great, but there were a lot more people, and quite a few Mickie Mouse people wanting money to take a photo. LOL. Didn't matter. I loved it.

    Gorgeous area of Athens
Fabulous part of Athens that is bustling with bars, restaurants, shops, ice cream parlours and ancient ruins! Lovely vibe during the day and it really comes alive at night with a busier pace. All the while, when you look up, you see the commanding view of the Acropolis & Parthenon above you!

    Charming neighborhood
My wife and I strolled through the Plaka each day of our stay in Athens. The narrow cobblestone streets with numerous shops and restaurants are charming. The highlight is having the Acropolis and Parthenon looming above you. It is really unforgettable.

Nice to wander about then cool off at a local tavern with a nice cool drink . Not to be missed it Mirror Magique tavern.
Plaka is easy to get to on the local bus from Adamantas. Cost for a single journey on the island if Milos is #2 euro. You can walk around the old town. And there are a few quaint restaurants you can sit and cool down with a cold beer 🍺

    girl time!
Ooh! Fun tourist shopping. I say "tourist" because..well, that's what it is...don't come here looking for something unique. Great atmosphere, fun shopping, and just overall enjoyable. Leave the husbands at home and do some girl shopping!

    Great Neighborhood in Athens
Charming neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis. Streets are colorful with many shops and restaurants. Great area to just wander and enjoy the sights and sounds. Close to the palace and the impressive changing of the guard ceremony. Hotel Plaka was a perfect location for our visit.

    Mezedes, Athens
Great food in a happening street in Plaka, Athens. We tried authentic Greek food, Dolmades, Mezze platter. We were given a complimentary sweet. This is very common in Greece to offer their speciality as a complimentary offering.

the quaint cobbled lanes of Plaka with its vibrant atmosphere and many shops selling a plethora of things from clothes to souvenirs to jewellery and the many local restaurants and rooftop coffee shops are a must visit for any tourist visiting Athens. There is a flea market in Monestriaki which is also interesting. There is no bargaining to be done in all the shops in Plaka. The shopkeepers may offer a small discount for cash payments though.

Possibly the most beautiful area within Athens, just into the centre of the city. Very close to public transport but also within walking distance from the main centre. Picturesque and unique, excellent cafés, restaurants and sightseeing.

This is a very quaint part of Athens well worth exploring whilst in Athens. There are a range of small tavernas and coffee houses that are well worth visiting whilst exploring the area. People are nice and welcoming and the views are a delight. The area is safe and very easy to navigate although some parts are steep or have narrow stairways

Our Airbnb was here. Lots of places to eat. Despite the graffiti, safe to walk at night. The Greeks eat much later than most Americans. Good location near museums, transportation, and historical sites.

We had several dinners in this old neighborhood that is just below the Acropolis. It is ground zero for tourism and for entertainment, so you will find lots of places to eat and drink and some charming streets to wander. You will also find lots of souvenirs to take home.

This area is very close to the Acropolis area of Athens and is considered one of the safer neighborhoods around the Acropolis from what we heard from the locals. It is full of Cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and grocery stores. When we visited in March a lot of shops closed around 9 or 10 pm but there were some good restaurants and bars open much later.

The Plaka area is surrounded by ancient Greek and Roman sights to see but inside there are less touristy stops like Athen's oldest house (Benizelos Mansion), some of the oldest churches in the city, ruins, and some museums with less foot traffic. There were lots of cats in the area as well if you're into that too.

Plaka makes for a good afternoon stop as you explore the city and has some nice hotels in the area as well. The closest metro stations are Monastiraki and Syntagma.

This lovely neighbourhood is the nicest area in Athens. Some of the restaurants and shops are overpriced, so watch out for that

Great places to visit: Acropolis Hill, Plaka... An amazing city! Plaka is a tourist area, and most of the shops are honest with reasonable prices. There are amazing museums here too - the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

BEWARE

If you see 2 or 3 people in a group with roses and the rest of them acting like tourists around them, you will most likely encounter them in the early afternoon and on weekends. They may try to push a flower onto you and take your purse/wallet simultaneously. If you refuse their flowers, they might use their own language to say something. Locals have mentioned that if you accept their flowers, they may follow you and ask for something in return.

Also, beware of a few small groups of people with yarn bracelets. Please refer to this link for details: Watch out for gypsies and scammers - Jeff1986-403 (https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g189400-d277449-r235045664-Plaka-Athens_Attica.html). I find it hard to believe that they still use the same trick after 10 years.

I was actually in Plaka in Sept 2021. The area was directly behind the hotel where we stayed (Athens Gate Hotel). There were plenty of restaurants, shops, and even an outdoor theater. Plaka was within walking distance to the Acropolis, Museums, the Temple of Zeus, and other sights in Athens. When visiting again, this is the area tha I will be visiting/staying.
