- ArtemisSan Diego, California103 contributionsGet yourself event tickets to fully enjoy this OdeonI have always enjoyed visiting the Odeon by day when I have visited Athens, but attending a concert there at night was a game changer. From now on, when I visit Athens, I will make sure I am there for a concert. What a magnificent experience! - KodoDrummerBuenos Aires, Argentina65,207 contributionsMajestic amphitheaterAmazing how they constructed such a large amphitheater. This is an archaeological marvel and a remnant of a glorious civilization. How did they manage without loudspeakers? Looking down from above, this stone, Roman style, open-air theatre, which is once again used for performances, is awesome.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 August 2023
- ADEL SAthens, Greece69 contributionsThe Power Of MusicTonight, the musical love themes of the great George Chatzinassios and the talented Stefanos Korkolis added a lot to the special atmosphere of this ancient theatre. The kind and sensitive voice of the young yet very promising Thodoris Voutsikakis further brought life to the music and the place and added a fresh flavor to the creations of the established composer. Herod Atticus Odeon was, is, and will always remain a special place that welcomes good art regardless and inspires great and talented artists who are able to revive and give new energy to its great history. An important reference point at the heart of the inspirational capital city, Athens!Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 September 2023
- elchacoHouston, Texas843 contributionsIncredible! We came in through the south entrance to the Acropolis, so the Odeon was the first major site we saw that was not in total ruins. It was amazing to see this structure from almost 2000 years ago still up and in service (after renovations.) Seeing a concert here would be out of this world!!!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2023
- Sally FPalmdale, California48 contributionsOnce in a lifetimeIf you can get tickets while in Athens, you have to go! We just walked up to the box office, but the concierge at your hotel can help, or you can buy online. The show we saw was all in Greek (several different singers, musicians, and a young adult choir) which we did not understand, but it didn't matter! When will we ever have the chance again to see a live performance at an odeon built in 161 AD! By the way,the acoustics are fantastic.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 September 2023
- Jason SMelbourne, Australia1,693 contributionsStunning Theatre and HistoryHerod Atticus Theatre is an amazing site to see, detail is incredible and to think something like this built over 2000 years ago is mind blowing. Was restored in the middle of last century so that it can be used today for events, would be a unique experience to watch a performance in the theater. Located on the slopes of the Acropolis and must see while in the complex and Athens.Visited March 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 September 2023
- Ali921Edinburgh, United Kingdom1,502 contributionsGood to see such a facility being used for today's purposesThe route down takes you right past it. Be prepared to fight through all the people who are taking it in turns to take a selfie (because that is more important than the structure itself ?). Have to have a guide or read up to understand its importance. Great to see it being used in a modern setting, day before there had been a music concert.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023
- nathaliequannOttawa, Canada39 contributionsAn evening I will never forgetI had the privilege of attending the magnificent anniversary concert Maria at the Herodium to celebrate Maria Callas's 100th birthday on September 16 this year. The Orchestra of the Greek National Opera was grandiose along with the 4 soprani who performed arias La Callas had performed at the same location years ago. I cried most of the evening, moved by the location, the music, the sounds and the beauty. If you are in Athens, look for performances here, or better, plan your trip around it. I promise you will not regret it...Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 November 2023
- Mairwen1United Kingdom9,563 contributionsThe Smaller of Two Theatres at the AcropolisThe Odeon was built in 161AD by the wealthy senator, Herodes Atticus, as a memorial to his Roman wife, Regilla. It may have been less a labour of love, than a sign of a guilty conscience. She died in very suspicious circumstances. Accusations were flying and Herodes was brought to trial, although he was ultimately acquitted. The Odeon is the smaller of the two theatres at the Acropolis but it’s the more stunning looking one. This is partly because it’s been fully restored and partly because you see it from a dramatic viewing point where you look down into the bowl of the theatre, towards the stage below. Originally the Odeon had a wooden roof, a three-storey facade of arches and approximately 5,000 marble seats. It was intended for lectures, poetry readings and musical performances, rather than theatre or plays. It was fully restored in 1953, allowing festivals and concerts to be held here today. TICKET TIP: I’d highly recommend buying the combo ticket. At €30, it is excellent value. It lasts for 5 days and includes entry to 7 ancient sites. Entry to the Acropolis on its own is €20 so if it is your first time to Athens, it makes sense to buy this ticket (unless you’re here in winter when many sites are half price).Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023

Given that this functions still as a theatre, I figured that visitors to the Acropolis would be able to walk around it. This sadly wasn’t the case. It was great to admire from above, but a shame that visitors couldn’t access it

Impressive.
We visited it during our visit on the Acropolis. Definitely worth the visit. One can feel the history behind it.

The theatre is incredible both for the size and the fact that it is still being used for productions. You can get a free view, but limited, from the bottom of the hill. From up on the Acropolis you can get a fantastic view from the top looking down. Gorgeous.

A fantastically restored ancient amphitheatre which is clearly still used for performances. You can see down into the seating area from the Acropolis when you are on your way back down from the Parthenon but if you turn right as you come out of the exit gate you can walk along the pedestrianised walk way and see the odeon again from the other side which give you a different perspective...

So impressive that this is still in use. This is part of the Acropolis area, and is accessed as you go towards the Acropolis.

We have dinner reservations at 8:00 and the performance is at 9:00. If we arrive late will we be admitted?

I hope not as it disrespects all of the musicians and performers. Solution - change your dinner reservation, go and eat afterwards.

I will be in Athens in July 2020 and would like to see some shows here. I noticed that the good seats sell out quickly. Florence and the Machine is sold out for September and it is only July! How do I get access to tickets to the front row seats early? Thanks for the help!
