Book a tour from Porto to the Douro River Valley. It is a long drive to rent a car, so a guide allows you to focus on the view and most were affordable. Ours came with a picnic lunch, other go to the local restaurants....More

The pictures do not prepare you for the verticality of the Douro valley. It is spectacular, and there are a lot of activities to do but my favorite is to climb up to the bridge and watch the river go by.

It will be surely cold weather and the scenery wil not be as green as in summer. However, if you find the same kind of joyful Portuguese people we met, it can be a good experience. Our boat had glass windows in the dining room, thus, you won't be cold in the meals, and you could eat and drink at your will during the meal time. Nevertheless, the way back may not be so glorious, since it will be night and the train won't offer the same wonderful vista that we had in summer.
