The most beautiful place in the city of Porto
The D. Luiz I bridge is very beautiful. For me, it is the most beautiful place in the city of Porto. It's worth visiting. Take photos from various angles in Vila Nova de Gaia (Serra do Pilar Monastery and banks of the Douro River). If you are lucky enough to catch a sunny day, the photos will be much better due to the colorful sky, the river and the houses on the banks of the Douro River.

Spectacular Bridge. Great sun sets over it.
Iconic bridge with great views of Porto and Vila Nova De Gaia. Two levels to the bridge and accessible by road and path. There is a funicular at the side of it to take you up to the top of the city, but this wasn't working when we went. (Be prepared for lots of steep hills and steps!) We wandered over the bridge a couple of times to visit the other side which is a must! There is lots to do and see over there too.

    Great views
We were lucky enough to have stunning views of this bridge from our apartment and could see it lit up at night in all its glory. There are two levels to it that you can walk across and it is worth doing this to explore both sides of the river. Lots of places to sit and admire this amazing structure while enjoying a drink.

    Nice walk
The bridge connects the city of Porto to the autonomous community of Vila Nova de Gaia, The artifact has a length of 172 meters and a height of 70 meters. It was designed by the Belgian engineer Téophile Seyrig, a student of Eiffel. It was built between 1880 and 1886 and characterizes the city profile with its large iron span. It is possible to cross it by car, by metro and even on foot, traveling either along the lower or upper part.

    Bridge
The arched iron bridge, which has become the symbol of Porto. There is pedestrian access on both floors, with the metro at the top and the highway at the bottom. It is the place where the panoramic view of Porto can be observed best. The view over the river during boat tours is also amazing.

    Walk over both levels
A walk over the bridge is a necessary stop on most Porto trips. We walked over the much smaller lower level from Cais de Ribeira to the other side of the river, and then walked across the upper level back from Vila Nova de Gaia. Was a nice place to walk; be aware that metro trains cross the bridge too so just be careful.

It's a must see, but be careful when it's windy
The bridge is a great view point of the city of Porto and Gaia. On the upper level you have to beware of the train that also goes there, I do not recommend to walk in the middle of the bridge, stay left or right and pass on the other side when sure. Also, maybe not recommended when windy, I went there when it was pretty windy and did not like the feeling. Anyway, it is a must see in Porto, one of its most famous monument.

Great sunset views from this bridge.
Amazing bridge and we timed it well with the sunset views. If you are at the lower street level by Cais da Ribeira, you can cross the bridge on foot to the other side then if you want to go up to the higher level for better views, take a side street nearby the Burmester Caves it will take you up next to the Vincci Ponte de Ferro and the Miradouro da Serra do Pilar. Or go back on the same lower level to Porto and then take the Funicular dos Guindais (4 euro a person) or vice versa. This is if you want to avoid climbing the stairs to the top part of Porto. We did both because we also wanted to visit the Porto Cathedral and the Bishop Palace.

    Iconic Porto Bridge
Impressive bridge, viewpoint and obligatory passage between Ribeira and Vila Nova de Gaia! To be admired from the quays of both banks or during the cruise on the Douro. For pedestrians, take the lower part between the quays or the top from Jardim Do Morro (after cable car and view or visit of the monastery) to the level of Sé Cathedral. TB seen from the upper landing…

You should definitely see it at sunset
If you are in Porto you should definitely see the bridge. Highly recommended to view this bridge during sunset. You don't have to pay to walk across the bridge. Be careful because this bridge is very popular during sunset. You can get a good spot if you arrive on time.

The bridge that must be crossed. Built by a disciple of Gustaphe Eiffel, with a height of 45 meters and a length of 395m for the upper platform (175m for the lower platform) It crosses the Douro between Porto and the new town of Gaia. We crossed it from above at the tram level and from below at the road level. the view is magnificent from both places. To reach the upper platform I recommend going via Dom Alfonso Henriques avenue which comes from the station much less arduous than the stairs and less expensive than the funicular. This leads to the monastery of Serra Do pilar on the other and bank , at the Jardim Do Morro de Gaia and at the Porto cellars. the return to Porto can be done via the lower platform.

The iron bridge was built in 1881-86 and at the time of completion it was the longest bridge of this type in the world. It has two levels connected by a powerful steel arch. The upper level is as much as 395 m long and the lower level is 172 m long. This is one of the greatest attractions of Porto and one of its showcases. Both levels are accessible to pedestrians, so I recommend walking on both levels. There is a metro line running on the upper level. It is also worth taking a walk in the evening or at night to see the illuminated old buildings of the city and watch the nightlife on both banks of the Douro River.

We tried to cross the upper bridge at night, but gave up (my wife was afraid of heights), and the next day we went across the river through the lower level. The upper floor is accessible to trains and people, and the lower floor is accessible to cars and people. The only upper layer is a low metal railing, which is super scary to worry about. My hand trembles a bit when I try to take a picture with my phone. The thrill is that the train passes right next to you (when there is no train, you walk on the tracks without permission). The thrill was even greater, perhaps because it was night. How calm I was when I walked downstairs the next day. Maybe the bridge crossing is a bit hard to tell. Please go to the train heading towards the bridge, car as a landmark.

Regardless of whether you consider this double-deck metal arch bridge as an engineering marvel or skeptically thinks otherwise, you can’t help but fall in love with this bridge. As simple as it may look, the beauty of the bridge cannot be denied. It is indeed a sight to behold as it seamlessly blends into the craggy topography of Porto. It is no surprise therefore that it has been proudly featuring as Porto’s iconic structure since its completion in 1886. No visit to Porto is complete without a walk across the bridge, which can be done on both decks although the upper deck is obviously the more popular option. From the waterfront square of Praca da Ribeira, we walked to the base of the bridge and took the
Guindais Funicular to the top which then conveniently connects to the upper deck of the bridge, crossing the 395 meters length to the chic Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood, all the while we’re a dizzying 45 meters above the Douro River. The views that greet us were simply breathtaking, especially during sunset. Even during the night, the bridge lit up spectacularly to reveal its zigzagging intersecting beams in all its glory. Five thumbs up! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Don Luis I Bridge is an architectural marvel and emblem of Porto. Crossing it on foot is an unforgettable experience as it offers spectacular views of the Douro River and the city on both sides. Both day and night, the bridge has a special charm, and watching the sunset from here is simply magical. It also easily connects the Ribeira area with Vila Nova de Gaia, where you can enjoy the famous port wineries. Definitely a must for any visitor. I loved the visit!

Dom Luís I Bridge connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, the municipality famous for its wineries, and is very recognizable from anywhere in the city because of its unmistakable iron structure. The upper part is reserved for pedestrians and a subway line, while the lower one, lined with a narrow sidewalk, flows ordinary traffic. On a sunny day it fills with street performers.

Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, offers a unique blend of history, vibrant culture and picturesque landscapes, making it a charming destination for a trip. Here are some of the main qualities that make Porto a captivating choice for tourists:

Historical and architectural wealth
Porto has a historic centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its narrow streets of parallel pedestals and old buildings dating back centuries. Ribeira, on the banks of the river Douro, is one of the most emblematic points, with its colorful facades and lively atmosphere. The varied architecture, from the iconic Clérigos Tower to the beautiful St. Benedict’s Station, which features hand-painted tiles, is an immersion into the city’s rich history.

Gastronomic culture
Porto is famous for its authentic gastronomy, which reflects the tradition and flavors of northern Portugal. One of the highlights is the Porto wine, which can be tasted in the many cellars along the river Douro. In addition, traditional dishes such as the francesinha (a meat-filled and sauce-covered sandwich) and the trendy Porto cod are a must. The city also houses restaurants of high gastronomy, making it a perfect destination for lovers of good table.

Landscapes and walks by the river Douro
The river Douro, which crosses the city, provides stunning landscapes and memorable tours. You can take cruises that reveal wonderful views of the city’s bridges and hills, as well as explore the Douro wine region, with its terrace vineyards, offering a unique visual experience. The Don Louis I Bridge, one of the most famous, offers magnificent views for both those who cross it and those who observe it from afar.

Cozy and authentic atmosphere
Porto is a city that manages to maintain its authenticity, with welcoming locals and a quieter pace of life compared to other larger European cities. The atmosphere is lively and relaxed at the same time, especially in the local cafes, bars and markets. The Bolhão Market, for example, is an excellent place to feel the Portuguese spirit and know local products.

Easy access and transportation
Porto has an excellent infrastructure for tourists, with an international airport that makes easy access to the city and an efficient public transport network, including metro and buses, that connect well the major tourist attractions. The city is also very walking, which allows to explore on foot and discover hidden corners and amazing views.

vibrant culture and art
The cultural life in Porto is rich, with a variety of museums, art galleries and events. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, the Palácio da Bolsa and the House of Music are just a few examples of how the city balances tradition with modernity. In addition, Porto has an emerging artistic scene, with many independent art galleries and cultural events throughout the year.

Worth doing. Started across on the lower part of the bridge then hiked up ( need sensible shoes and be fit or take your time) to get to the top so that you can walk bridge back. Great shots of the city for sure. We ended up taking a Tuk Tuk tour to Gai which was fun and worth seeing as many people not aware that it is a separate city from Porto

The Luis Bridge is an absolute must-visit in Portugal. Its stunning architecture and unique double-deck design make it a masterpiece of engineering and beauty. Whether you’re walking across or taking in the views of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia from afar, the experience is unforgettable. The panoramic views of the Douro River, colorful houses, and historic landmarks are truly spectacular, especially at sunset. A photographer’s dream and a wonderful spot to soak in the charm of the city. Highly recommend a visit!

It is an iron arch bridge 385m long and 85m high, built by the Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, a student of Eiffel. Cross it both at the bottom and at the top, during the day and in the evening. The view of the Douro river with its boats and the Ribeira is beautiful. On a sunny day observing all the colors from here is something extraordinary but in the evening it is no different. Cross the bridge and you will find yourself in Vila Nova de Gaia with its succession of cellars. I recommend visiting one, it's always interesting to learn something new
