Unfortunately the castle is currently closed and I cannot find any information about an opening date. Nonetheless the views over Funchal from the walkway in front of the castle are spectacular and the nearby cafe is a welcome diversion after all that climbing.

As noted by others the fort is closed. The views at the top are worth the climb though and if you have young children there's a little play area next to coffee shop. We climbed up for morning coffee and cake!

A steep climb, although one can also go via the roads in either side (we did this bc of stroller). Very nice view, but unfortunately still closed with no explanation.

After a long walk up the hill I figured out that the fortress is temporarily closed. The waitress in the lovely café behind the fortress informed me that the local government wants to turn it into a museum. The date for the reopening is unknown...More

It's a very steep climb to the fort and unfortunately it isn't open at the moment due to restoration, it would have been nice if some information had been advised before the walk to it.

After a long, steep climb up to the fort we found out it is closed for renovation - even though there is no notification of this anywhere, found out from the waitress at the cafe which is open and serving drinks and food.

If you want to visit this fortress you can take the car or go by foot. It's a good walk from the center of Funchal to this place, but the views are superb! There is a good place to have a quick bite or have...More

The fortress of “São João Baptista do Pico” is situated on the height called “Pico dos Frios” which is in the location of “São Pedro” in Funchal, and it was at a few minutes’ drive from our hotel “Four Views Bahia”. The fortress was built...More

We tried to visit this attraction... But it is closed... Surroundings inspire potential and the nearby cafe is great. It has a small children's park.

Buses go up the main dual carriageway to west of fort. These leaves you at bottom of the hill though with a big climb. Depends how fit you feel! Alternatively walk up from old town or get a taxi for a few Euros...
