We organized the trip on our own. We took the bus 53 from Funchal to Santana for 3.35 € p.p. Alone the bus trip up to ribero frio was really great and worth the money. We visited this walk, officially called PR11, as a starter...More

Small walk up to a viewpoint. Very "touristy" and can be done in a wheelchair. If you start by the restaurants below the balconies, you can walk up the stairs, directly to the viewing point (saving you the flat and somewhat boring walk through the...More

An easy one hour walk (back and forth) to reach a superb balcony with a view on the montains, the valley down to the ocean.

It´s an easy levada walk of about 30 minutes to the viewpoint. Sturdy shoes are advisable because the ground is a bit uneven at times. The view at Balcoes is beautiful.

A walk not that long and difficult, but with a nice extra at the end of the levada walk, a great viewpoint with Madeira finches which are, on that point, all over the place.

Fantastic on a clear day with 360 degree stunning views back into the valley of the nuns. Also the restaurants there are all very good. There is a signed walk which takes about 20 minutes.

We drove to Ribeiro Frio and parked for free on the approach road, parking very close to the side of the road as it was quite narrow. The levada walk is well signposted and starts by the side of the road. Although it isn't particularly...More

Off the bus (56) in Ribeiro Frio; 40m to the signed walk, wide and flat. 1500m can be covered in 15/20 minutes comfortably! Lovely long view on a clear day, best seen early in the day at peak holiday time...only 6 people at 9am but...More

We were passing through this small town, and saw the sign, and the tourist shop, and decided to pull over. Thank goodness we did. The "Vereda Dos Balcoes" is about a 30minute walk. Take good shoes. We went on an overcast day, and it had...More

This beautiful trout farm is free to get into and walk around. There are plenty of fish to see in varying sizes. It has a few small waterfalls running through it. Conveniently located near to restaurants and gift shops.

The route itself is probably the easiest on the entire isle, it's wide enough to let 3-4 people walk side by side, so there won't be any issue with the path being to narrow and people can get through walking in both directions without any...More

Hi The viewpoint is 880m above sea level so probably a few hundred meters above the valley floor.
