We visited Obidos to see the Christmas fare and were really impressed with the castle and surrounding areas.
I’m not entirely sure that the admission price of €10 is worth it for adults visiting without kids as it is very focused on children as you’d expect, unless you want to wait 30 minutes to sit on Santa’s lap then you might want to give it a miss.
But the castle is very impressive and the surrounding village is very nice and is full of souvenir shops and craft shops.
As for the walk along the walls, you’ll need a head for heights. In places its exposed and narrow.

Beautiful walled village with castle to go street 1 day. In the tourist area, shops with crafts, cherry liquor and restaurants. The castle costs 5 euros for adults and children over 12 years and 3 euros for children, I find it expensive for what it is, but we have still enjoyed it. It has a medieval setting, games and very cool constructions.

Simply one of the most beautiful cities I visited in Portugal. The wall and castle are very well preserved. We went on a Sunday and the city was empty so it was great to walk through the alleys and walls. In the castle there is an inn with an excellent restaurant!

Intact with all its walls, well maintained and well maintained. Suitable for a visit
very admirable commitment to "reviving" the castle by building inside the spaces as they were at the time,
Obidos Castle is impressive and discreet, standing at the top of the town,

Visited in the Fall of 2022! I would have stayed more than one day. That’s all the time we had. The Castle was a magical place to experience! So many little artisan shops, good food and beautiful scenery! Outdoor musicians, artists and delightful preserves! A must!

Beautiful walled town, we have been told that 40 families still live within the walled town. The rest of the houses retain their splendor but have been transformed into tourist shops or restaurants. Even a church near the castle has been transformed into a bookstore. There are some specialized stores although most are for recurring gifts. The clothes are very pretty, but expensive. To eat, it is preferable to reserve first thing in the morning as it fills up with tourists. You can walk along the entire very well-preserved wall, although in some sections it is a little dangerous. You must visit the castle and not miss this town, it gives a perfect idea of what the walled towns of the Middle Ages were like. There are very beautiful pure wool clothes that are reasonably priced considering the quality.

When you want to enter the courtyard of the castle, a caretaker asks you to buy a ticket. At the cash register we sell you a medieval exhibition. Unfortunately in the courtyard the cabins are closed and there is absolutely nothing to see.

This is quite a con, the Castle is just about nonexistent unless you are staying in it (which I don’t recommend) so all you are seeing are the Castle walls. The streets are lined with restaurants and tat shops, shops selling overpriced giftware, some of which is made in China. It’s like Disney has met Portuguese wine and made a baby, it’s not cultural nor entertaining. Shame really.

The entire old town of Obidos is sensational, the ancient streets, narrow laneways, great city walls, churches and the castle all add to the WOW factor of the medieval site. Don’t rush your visit and if possible visit mid week to avoid the long weekend tourists. If you are staying the night visiting the old town at 7.30am should give you an hour to enjoy the site and take your photos before the first tours arrive. The walk around the city walls was a highlight.

The Obidos Castle is one out of many alike castles spread all over Portugal.
It dates back to 8 century - very simple yet beautiful. It was held by the Moors until they were defeated in 12 c. Considering its age it's very well preserved.
There's no entrance fee to enter its grounds which you can do from two sides - from the village side on foot and from the back side which you can reach by car.
However, the Castle is not open to public so you cannot enter it.
The biggest attraction is climbing and walking the ramparts. From up there are terrific views of the Castle itself, as well of the whole village of Obidos.
BEWARE, you do that on your own risk which is clearly stated on plaques around.
There is no protective fence, and some parts are pretty high. Elderly people and those with height issues should avoid that, as well children.

Staying at the Pousada is a great experience, lovely view from the dining room.
There are some nice restaurants in the town, lots of bars and tourists shops. A place to walk around but not much to do. Nice churches and a couple of museums.

Hi, we are arriving in Obidos by bus from Lisbon and want to stay at the Castelo de Obidos. I was wondering how difficult it would be to get our bags up to the top to the castle - are there taxis or will the staff come and pick you up from the entrance of the town.
It looks like it is very steep to the top (with suitcases) . I have emailed the staff twice but they have failed to give me the answer.

HI Margie
As you come from Lisbon the bus will leave you in the parking area specially designed for.
As you are going a little bit backward you'll find the TOWN'S GATE (nicely decorated with ceramic tiles - azulejos). To the right you'll see a little square (for taxi), a bench and a fountain with fresh water and the terrace of the Josefa Albergaria Hotel. Once that you passed under the gate you are in front of two streets:
~ Right - as you look you'll see a cafeteria (Marion, or something like this) and a small dark pink tower gate that belongs to the same cafeteria
~ Left (in front a white house with the edges painted in yellowish brown and a column) a white house that has blue edges. The left street I recommend it because is just following it, staight ahead. On the way you'll see: right side (a chocolateria), left side a Bougonvilea Tree (red) linked by the house, restaurants (right side), souvenir shop (left sine). Opposing this souvenir shop there is a parking area and a church. From here only 200 metres and you'll find the porch that leads you to reception (terrace to the right). Also on the way you'll see the police / firesquad station, workshop (left side) and a beautiful house with an open porch covered by Bouguonvilea (right side) and in front a church that actually is a bookstore. From here to the right you'll see the arrow sign towards reception.
Do not be afraid of getting up to the citadel, it is easy and the street I recommend it is a staight line. You'll enjoy every second spent in here.
