Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Travel in to the times of the Portuguese adventures in this place - the culture and tradition of the Orient in the capital.
If you have time, visit in the roof the buffet restaurant, with nice view to the pier, bridge, river and other side.

The permanent exhibit is devoted to the Portuguese legacy in the Far East, so you will learn a lot about the old colonies and see some rare objects. We also saw a very good temporary expo on Chinese opera. We had the whole place to ourselves, only one other patron on a Wednesday afternoon. Nice display space.

Have visited this museum in the past when living in Lisbon and recently went back again on Friday evening, when entrance is free after 6 pm. It has a very wide and diverse collection of Asian history and artifacts. If you're interested in the Asian cultures, this visit would be highly recommended. Right now one of the floors is now housing an exhibit of Chinese Opera as well. If you have a Friday evening available, the entrance is free as mentioned, so an even bigger incentive to go. There is also a cafeteria and a restaurant in case you're hungry, and you can purchase an audio guide but there is plenty of information in portuguese and english to digest everything without the guide.

We were really going to the museum of antiquities but overshot our stop. We were on a crowded metro bus. Trusting in chance we visited the oriental museum. We watched the film on the star who played in the opera of the girl with the white hair. After being praised by Mao's wife she became associated with the gang of 4 and was basically imprisoned. Eventually after the cultural revolution, she was forgotten. Very interesting story because of the politics. Certainly enjoyed seeing the fancy costumes of the Chinese opera performers.

I felt that if this is what you are interested in, then its a great museum. The displays were well presented, and good lighting. The descriptions on the wall were all a large enough print that could read from a reasonable distance.

Had a private tour for an after hours event. I really enjoyed it. The guide was very knowledgeable and shared information on the relationship between the Orient and Portugal. If you're looking for history just on the orient, this will not be for you. Not sure if there are guided tours during typical hours, but that definitely made the experience

The museum displays not enough asian art and is so bloody far away from the center(not well connected to the public Transportation services).

This is a fantastic museum having collections that are very interesting. The displays are dramatic and very well curated.
Besides the restaurant has a fantastic Sunday brunch with views of the river and the docks..with an awesome spread that will leave your appetite well sated.

Art and artifacts testify to the trade/political relationships between Portugal and the colonies. One of the best ways to understand Portuguese history. Explanations are very thoughtful. Beautiful, too

A friend and I visited the Museu do Oriente in October of 2016 and enjoyed it a lot. It is a large modern building filled with wonderful displays of Asian treasures. The admission price was reasonable and one could spent a lot of time there without doubt. In addition to the collection itself, there are meeting rooms, a gift shop and also a cafeteria. It is definitely worth a visit.
