The monument celebrates the victory of the Portugese over the Spanish who had ruled Portugal for 60 years. It was a revolution and not unlike a civil war; neighbors fought each other, border skirmish activity went on for about 28 years (1640-1668). Fields were burnt,...More

Strange name but really it's a monument and a plaza that marks the independence of Portugal in 1640 from 40 years of Spanish rule. Worth a visit

There are so many impressive historic monuments throughout Lisbon including this one marking the rule of the Portuguese Braganzas.

And it was very near my hotel so I passed it several times during my days in Lisbon. I cannot imagine the square without the monument in the center. It commemorates the independence of Portugal from 60 years of Spanish rule in 1640.

After riding down the hill on the elevator Gloria (a tram, not what is an elevator in English) we came across this monument in the plaza.

A beautiful monument placed in the middle of Restauradores Square. But not a must see, though. Across the street is the end of the line of Elevador da Gloria, a picturesque funicular.

A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site,
Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply
"Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake

earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its
name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in
Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the
