On the grounds of the Batalha Monastery was fought a battle between Spain and Portugal. The grounds mimic that of previous victories of Spain. In the end Portugal defeated Spain at their own game.

Not ornate in the nave but high and elegant, so conveying a great sense of peace, tranquillity and awe. The tombs of a number of Portuguese kings are here. The unfinished chapels are not to be missed both for themselves and for the ornate decor,...More

A place of residence for many of Portugal's deceased royal family, so a place where you find a lot of Portugal's history. It was a very interesting visit.

This is a must see. I can't believe the beauty and the size is outstanding. It took them a long time to build but when you see the detail and enormity of the structure, you can understand why. REALLY BEAUTIFUL

There are several UNESCO World Heritage sites, in relatively close proximity, in the Estremadura region of Portugal (just north of Lisbon). And, while they are all worthwhile, if I had to prioritize, I would rank the Batalha Monastery as my favorite. First, the town makes...More

The Monastery at Batalha is a great and beautiful diversion from the hustle and bustle of Fatima and more beautiful. If you have time, pay to go through the Monastery but it is even beautiful from the outside.

We paid for places we visited as we visited. Am unfamiliar with the three location ticket/pass. Several guide books recommend seeing Batatlha and Alcobaça on the same day. The architecture at Batatlha is fascinating ... we... More
