An old city gate. Funilly hidden between much newer houses. The strange thing is you find yet another gate just behind it so one can see how strongly protected the city entrance was!

If you go to the university of Coimbra you most likely would pass thru this old fortress tower gate. There's a museum on the left hand side of the street right after the gate.

One of the sites that has necessarily to pass. Take the opportunity to also see the stores that are close by.

as the only other people appeared to be either students or lving in Coimbra we had a lovely visit to this area - nice cafes and shops too v

I passed threw everyday for many years... didn't looked at it . Now here it is to stay... It was a gate to the castle ... and many students went to university under is arc.

Due to lack of signage, 99.9 % miss this treat... An interactive museum in the moorishly square citadel tower adjacent, behind and above the arch. There is an excellent model of the citadel's entire circumference with a lighted keyboard to explain each important location on...More

This is the original entrance to the old walled city. There are lots of shops and restaurants around the gate.

Very interesting arc. A double arched entrance way. Has holes in the ceiling which was used by the soldiers to throw hot oil on the moors attacking below. These holes are called mata-caes - "dog killers"

It is hard to find free parking sites close to Coimbra's city centre. However the parking prices are acceptable and to park near Ponte de Santa Clara seems to be the best solution to visit Coimbra's centre.
