The Sao Sebastiao Aqueduct at Praca Joao Paulo II, Coimbra 3000-227, Portugal is imposing, makes you think about the Roman past, and is a pleasure to walk under and along.

We saw this site on the way to the Jardim Botanico...but don't go out of your way. Not a key feature in Coimbra. You can also see it from the plaza Largo Don Dinis without walking down the hill.


This impressive structure was right near our apartment and crossing under the arches led to the botanical garden and the university campus. It was a picturesque land mark for finding our way home from restaurants and fado bars of the old town.

If you are in the centre of Coimbra it is hard to miss this impressive aqueduct which runs for over a kilometre. However, there is a misconception supported by a number of reviews that it is Roman. In fact it was built during the reign...More
