Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited this museum on September 30th. You can buy a combination ticket for this museum, the Art Nova museum and the Ciadad museum. The information boards are in Portuguese and English. This museum is located in the monastery where Princess Joan lived and died as a nun. The highlight is her tomb, the chapel and the statues they display during the procession.

While you can spend day after day exploring museums (which isn't really my cup of tea), in order to get out of the rain, I walked across the courtyard from my hotel to this museum. It's worth wandering around and spending an hour learning about Princess D. Joana and the convent. The old convent has been well-preserved and offers good history of the city and area. The English translations aren't great (look more like Google translate) but the general idea works. It's interesting to see the art (especially of D. Joana) move through the centuries as the artists learn about shadowing, depicting 3D images, etc.

You really have to really like paintings representing calvaries, recumbent figures, saints to appreciate this place! The princess's sarcophagus is a marvel but it does not reflect her supposed modesty. The church is filled with gold and baroque: a spectacle for the eyes which no longer means much in our desecrated times.

This museum has to be one of Portugal's unsung heroes. There is so much to do and see in Portugal but this museum is a must see.
My husband and I were blown away by the beauty of the little church and the wonderful ceilings. We spent about an hour and a half here wondering around taking photos just taking in the beauty all around us.

This museum incorporates much of the medieval former Convent of Jesus (where the 15th century Princess Joana of Portugal lived and died as a nun). Attractively laid out; a self-guided audio tour is available in English, Portuguese or Spanish. Small gift shop; there is also a cafeteria which was closed on the day of my visit. Admission for adults is 4 Euros. Overall, this interesting museum is a credit to the City of Averio.

I really enjoyed this. The convent is really interesting. You can see where the nuns lived. And the church is truly beautiful. And on two levels. Upstairs is where the nuns worshipped.
The whole place is golden and opulent. Well worth the visit on its own.
Then there is the museum - full of beautiful and interesting items. You get a real feel for the history.
There is an awful lot to see. Make sure you don't miss anything.
The whole experience is high quality and would be worth visiting in any city in the world. It was fun to find it in Aveiro.

I was not prepared for the awsome beauty of the convent itself, one of the few late "pure" gothic monuments in Portugal. Beautiful! Even the added early baroc altar in the church is marvellous, one needs time to appreciate how impressive. After, the visit includes a very large collection of good religious sculpture in the monastery rooms, very well displayed.

We spent a most enjoyable and educational two hours wandering around this extensive museum. Although not religious people we were most impressed at the beauty and splendour of much of this museum, and the amazing level of artistic craftsmanship.
One tip here is to buy the multi site ticket. It’s only one euro more and you get entry to a further three museums. I would have to add that none of these come anywhere near the museum of aviero, but they are worth a look.

This museum is based around Santa Johanna and her life.
When you buy your ticket ask for an audio guide as there is no indication they are on offer. Although the signage around the museum is very good the audio guide augments them
The chapel is very impressive although our visit was restricted by a tour group sitting in the pews and who had a very expansive guide who spoke for almost 45 minutes.
The cloister area is interesting and you can imagine what life was like back when it was in full use.
The art museum upstairs is huge and you need to put aside a good 1 - 2 hours if you want to see everything on offer.
Overall a very rewarding visit.
