Being a carpenter, the wooden altar in the Mother-Chapel was breathtaking. It is well worth the reasonable entrance fee.

Though this is a small collection, it is very good and has some of the most unique pieces I have seen. The architecture of the building is very interesting by itself. The wood carved altar is exquisite.

Museu Carlos Machado ($E2) in Capelas. Whole rooms of bygone (barber’s, cobbler, photo store, etc.) Dioramas of religious festivals of various villages. Wonderful craft displays (flowers made from onion and garlic skins, fig piths, fish scales).

Yes, this is a mistake. The Carlos Machado Museum is really located in Ponta Delgada only not in Madeira island, but in the Azores.
