Fabulous - I had no interest in tapestry before(!) but this place has a real story to tell, and the work on display is truly superb. Take time to read the leaflet given at the entrance, it gives much of the important context. This is...More

"Modern" tapestries shouldn't put potential visitors off. I found my way to the museum of tapestry almost by accident. The work is amazing technically and extraordinarily beautiful. It would worth flying to Lisbon and then driving 3 hours to Portalegre just to visit it!!

This town is where the tradition of Portuguese tapestry was resuscitated after World War II. The museum explains the history of tapestry making in Portugal, and exhibits old and modern tapestries that are stunning. Very educational.
