The market wasn't really happening when we were there, but the Grote Markt square is still worth the visit. Beautiful buildings and tons of restaurants nearby where you can sit outside and enjoy the views!

As is the case with every great Flemish city, Antwerp’s medieval heart was a classic Grote Markt. The square features, among other buildings, an Italo-Flemish Renaissance-style stadhuis and the baroque Brabo Fountain depicting the hero of Antwerp’s giant-killing, hand-throwing foundation legend.

First there is the architectural beauty of these old meesterhuizen, kept in a beautiful state. But than there is the atmosphere of the nice pubs restaurant with marvelous terrasses in summer and the excellent Belgium beer

The buildings surrounding the Grote Market are very pretty and they are even more so during the holidays. The nice Christmas Market was a lovely touch to the square.

Beautiful market place frozen in time. The guild houses are beautiful. And there is of course the city hall building! A must see whenever you visit Antwerp. And it is free!

The cathedral opens for visits at 1000 except Sundays and public holidays.

The Grote Markt is around 20-25 minutes stroll from the southern most dock. Depending on your docking station, will determine. The old town including Grote Markt is a must. Check with your cruise company as they often lay on... More
