About
- Temporarily closed The engine whistles and the fireman shovels coal. Wooden partitions creak, wheels sing and steam hisses. In your carriage you will experience a story from a bygone era. Between the historic towns of Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen steamtrams meander from village to village across the Westfrisian countryside and a historic steamer with a fantastic saloon-deck sails along the coast of lake IJsselmeer.

- WILLIAM1066Farnborough, United Kingdom156 contributionsWouldn't have mised it for anythingI am a sucker for vintage steam engines. Although the engine pulling our train wasn't a tram, they do have genuine steam powered trams. You get to see the Dutch countryside from an excellent vantage point. The ride on the Ijsselmeer on the MV Friesland is something special too. One word of warning. It does get very crowded so buy your tickets beforehand.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- Pamela C40 contributionsWell worth a visitI went here with a group and we did the boat and train experience both were really good. The boat was historical and it was lovely to look around. Facilities on board toilets and cafe both good. Lovely views from the water too. Enkhuizen was a pretty small town but with an amazing bakery at the end of the shops by the bridge! Very charming place to look around. Train trip was stunning! To see the bulb fields, windmills, houses and wildlife. On board a buffet car for drinks if you wanted. Toilets at the stations along the journey. Staff very informative and chatty. Hoorn itself had lots of shops if you go over the bridge and also some very interesting sights Great time thanksVisited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 April 2024
- Michael HMartock, United Kingdom599 contributionsAuthentic and fun.We only did the train journey having arrived at Medemblik on a river cruise. We did see the Friesland and it was an interesting contrast with the modern river cruise ship. It looked fun! After a coach trip to Hoorn we had time to look around the museum before boarding the train, pulled by a steam engine. The carriages are authentic and lack just a little in seat comfort. All part of the experience. There is a twenty minute stop to review information at a station en route. Pleasant journey to Medemblik with a good view of the windmill as you arrive.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2024

This was a great experience for my 8 year old daughter. As part of the trip we took a boat on Lake IJsselmeer to complete our trip and had a picnic at our destination. Beautiful and very memorable day! We actually took this trip back in 1993 (no option to revert to this date in drop-down list)

The steam railway from Hoorn to Medemblik is a great visit if you like steam railways. The trains run from Hoorn which has connections to the NS with regular trains running to stations in the local area.
There is a small museum display at Hoorn station and worth checking out before getting the steam train.
The carriages have been restored and I think some were even built by the railway company.
I really enjoyed the journey to the coast and the train cannot travel too fast as it has to slow down for level crossings.
It stops at Wognum where there are opportunities to take pictures of the train and play with some of the vintage hula hoops and stilts.
The staff were all really friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended!

We took the package, which included the boat, the Friesland, from Enkhuizen to Medemblik, a bagged lunch, and the train from Medemblik to Hoorn. We drove to Enkhuizen and got the boat at 10:40. It arrived in Medemblik at 11:50 and we took the train at 1:20. We took the bagged lunch so that we would have time to walk around Medemblik as it is a very picturesque, quaint older town. We just loved it. However, given the time there, I am sure one would have plenty of time to have lunch at one of the many outdoor cafes if you preferred that to walking around town.
We enjoyed the boat as it was quite spacious. No doubt you might want to stay inside due to all the fish flies or whatever flies they were. The coastline is not at all interesting other than the departure from Enkhuizen and the arrival in Medemblik.
The train was a great experience. Snacks and beverages are available on board. It goes by country homes, dairy farms and tulip fields and was so much more scenic than driving on a highway. Once in Hoorn, we took the regular train back to Enkhuizen. Note that this is not included in the package so you will need your chip card or purchase a ticket to get back. Once back in Enkhuizen, we enjoyed a lovely walk around the town before having dinner there.
I suggest that if you have children, please know your children. If they are the type that would be totally uninterested and do nothing but run up and down the aisle, please do not bring them.

Unfortunately I couldn't get to Hoorn because there was an NS train strike on the day that I had booked to travel.
Thanks to an email from the museum, I was made aware that there would be problems the day before. Although I had already booked and paid online, they cancelled my reservation and reimbursed me immediately.
I was very impressed by how quickly they responded to my emails, how honest they were about the sitution (which was caused by another company) and how easily they refunded me.
I sincerely hope that the next time I travel to the Netherlands, I will be able to travel by train/boat and have the enjoyable experience I missed out on in August.

with the historic steam train from Hoorn to Medemblik and then with the ferry "MS Friesland" from 1956 to Enkhuizen. In Enkhuizen, it is worth visiting the open-air museum "Zuiderzee" with its many buildings and trades from North Holland's past.
The return journey to Hoorn is by regular train, which runs regularly from Enkhuizen station.
I can recommend the combination ticket: steam train - ship - open-air museum; the ticket for the return journey must be purchased separately.
All in all - a successful trip into the past for the whole family.

Took the steam tram to Medemblik which drives across the flat and watery countryside! Very pleasant ride taking about an hour. Time to explore Medemblik and buy snack lunch before getting the ferry for another hour or so to a museum about the Zuider Zee. They have assembled houses from all over Holland to show how life was! Fascinating! Could have spent longer ...
Then walk back to the local station and NS train back to Amsterdam; a very good day out!

A lovely train ride in old tram carriages hauled by a well-maintained and loved old steam train. It rattles along in fine style and as the seats are wooden and the journey over an hour you may need something a little soft to sit on if you don't have 'natural padding'. Don't miss the buffet car in the train as they have hot drinks and cakes available. As you walk through it's nice to linger on the open balcony at the end of the carriage to experience the sights, sounds and smell of the steam engine working hard.

Nice trip with a beautiful 1900 steam tram. The only disadvantage was the fellow travelers with little respect for other people's things and unfortunately the tram passes many places that are not very nostalgic. But the museum can't do anything about that. The combination with other museums in Hoorn, Medemblik and Enkhuizen is more fun. Otherwise it's a bit boring.

We went to Hoorn by car. From there by steam train to Medemblik and Boat to Enhuizen.
The steam train is an experience! For young and old. The staff / volunteers do their utmost to make it fun by letting you experience what it was like at the time. Both at departure in Hoorn, but also at the stops and arrival in Medemblik.
The cruise is then somewhat passive. A beautiful ship, wonderful sailing but little interaction and little experience. As far as I am concerned, that is a suggestion to improve. E.g. Steam engine may visit in small groups, personnel in old gestation, etc.

Hi - we are going to Amsterdam this July and I was researching places to go, things to do, etc. It has been mentioned in reviews that the tram/boat ride was free because if you had the Museumkaart. It is currently around 60 euros/pp. As a non-resident, I believe it is only valid for 31 days which is ok w/ us. Do you just show your card at the Museum Stoomtram to get your tram/boat ticket or did you reserve a ticket online? would you recommend reserving/buying tickets in advance? If we did the Hoorn-Medemblik by tram then boat to Enkhizen, do we have to buy our own train ticket back to Hoorn and then to Amsterdam, or just the return to Amsterdam?
Written 16 March 2017
Do you know if there's a way to buy one ticket for this entire trip? Did you have to buy each leg of the trip separately? Where did you make each purchase? Thanks.
