Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The tower of Hoorn clearly displays that the cities focus was on the sea and not on the roads. Trying to impress the arriving ships a huge tower was built at the port. Marvellous to see

We ate here on a wild and woolly evening. We had a perfect window table in this 16th century fortified tower from which we could see the boats bobbing about in the harbour. It is like dipping a toe into history. The service was wonderfully friendly and helpful. As usual in Holland, the fish dishes were excellent. My only complaint would be that the Romanian wines didn't match up to the food or the setting.

Unmissable structure on the waterfront at Hoorn. It is a strange half tower made of grey sandstone on the Ijsselmeer side, but has a brick frontage landward. The defensive former seaward side, ( which was previously known as the Zuiderzee) is as decorative as the rear.
It is hard to know exactly what to make of the defensive capabilities of the Hoofdtoren, but its very presence in Hoorn, must have had some sort of deterrent value. The decorative lantern on top of the steep sided , and tiled roof must surely have been added much later, gives a rather twee look about it.

The restaurant/cafe was unfortunately closed at the hour that I was there, but I really enjoyed the building. It is indeed a focal point of the harbor, and I hung around enjoying the views and the people- and boat-watching, protected by the unicorn. The statue(s) of the 3 boys is adjacent.

We were recommended this by a local taxi driver and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is right by the harbour and has lovely views from the upper floor. This is accessed by a concrete spiral staircase. The restaurant is very quaint with wooden beams. Menus were provided in English and the waitress was very helpful explaining the menu. We decided on catch of the day; fish was cooked wonderful and was served on a bed of pasta. It was served with side orders of new potatoes; chips and veg. It was so much we couldnt eat a dessert. Those we did see looked wonderful. Our meal for two catch of the day and four drinks cost €78.

Hoofdtoren Hoorn is one of several defensive watchtowers of the town.As it is a restaurant the interior can be visired as well.Other defensive towers in Hoorn are Maria of Kruittoren dating from 1508 and Oosterpoort Hoorn dating from 1578.
The Hoofdtoren can be seen from nearby Julianapark

Because it's stronger and this tower was built as a fortification. But it's more expensive so along the back they used brick. After it wasn't needed as a tower anymore, the top was added. Nice example of the unicorn holding the coat of arms for the city of Hoorn.

It was a blustery, rainy day so walking along this waterfront area required a strong sense of adventure. Perhaps the weather is what made our experience all the more impressive. We loved the architecture of Hoorn and this tower was no exception. I would have liked to see more public information plaques in all of Holland. Lack of public information made it difficult for solo travelers who did not want to purchase a tour for every little activity or town we stopped in.

Visiting Hoorn on a tour. This is a lovely town and the tower is probably the most important landmark of the town. Makes for great photos around the harbour.

Hoorn has a very beautiful harbour, and it's not so popular among the tourists, which gives it a different taste. These watchtowers are a fine example of the Dutch architectural defense.
