    Gorgeous Grote Markt
My self-guided tour of Haarlem started with the tourist office at the Grote Markt Stadhuis, where I bought a self guided tour for 1€. Grote Markt is spectacular! I admired monumental Sint-Bavokerk, beautiful Vleeshal with its distinctive roof gables, took a lot of pictures, and then headed back to the Stadhuis and continued along Konigstraat stopping for a minute at the cozy Stadhuis hidden garden along my way. Haarlem has several hidden gardens, all of them very pretty (there is a special self-guided tour for them available at the Grote Markt tourist office).

Nice day trip from Amsterdam, only 15 to 20 minutes by train
We spent a few hours in Haarlem during one of our days in Amsterdam. Very easy to purchase round-trip train tickets (the same day of our travel - no advance reservations needed) from the main ticket distribution center at Central Station in Amsterdam for about 10 euros each. Very easy to then hop on the train and get to Haarlem. There are five or six trains running every hour from Amsterdam Central Station to Haarlem, so you can always find a train quickly. Once in Haarlem, it’s a very nice walk to the center market, the churches, and the rest of Haarlem. A very cute town, and not nearly as busy as an Amsterdam.

Flanked by the monumental city hall, art museum formerly meat hall, and Majestic St. Bavo’s Cathedral, the market square oozes history. There are several historical and contemporary sculptures, and of course plenty restaurants with outdoor seating. A must visit location in the gorgeous city of Haarlem.

An immense square (the market square) with many of the emblematic buildings of the city: church of San Bavo, City Hall, Meat and Fish Market (now houses museums and exhibitions) and many restaurants with terraces (currently in rehabilitation work, so covered in scaffolding).

The city as a whole is a real gem. You can see a very high economic level and it is nice to walk through its pedestrian streets.

There are some beautiful old buildings around, with the Vleeshal and Vishal being must see exteriors. The VVV on the market is very friendly and informative with some good tips. It unfortunately started to rain heavily in the afternoon and for most of my stay, but what I saw was good architecture and a city with history

It is a beautiful market square in the very center of Haarlem and right next to the church. From here you can head out into the beautiful alleyways of the city to explore the great shops. There are also lots of good restaurants! Top.

Every time we visit Haarlem (two weeks a year) we spend a lot of time in the Grote Markt. In the summer, there are people sitting outside at the many restaurants and bars.

On Saturday, the market is not to be missed! Flowers, meats, fish, fruit, veggies, dips, breads, pastries, chocolates, eggs, and clothing are some of the items to be found. And people. Lots of people!

This is a lively area during any season, in fact.

Grote Markt is in the centre of town and is the town square. The imposing Sint-Bavokerk (more than 80 meters high) is located here.

Its vibrant and busy and looks particularly pretty at night. Some night the smaller bars have patrons spilling out onto the street.

Its surrounded by cafes bars and restaurants with lots of seating outdoors.

We enjoyed several meals at restaurants here and thought Haarlem in general was such a lovely town.

Very nice square and a major focal point of the city with very old buildings around it. Was completely filled with a fun fair and massive street party when we arrived on 'Kings Day (though the whole town centre seemed to be a massive street party - great fun). The following day, it was being cleaned up. Saturday, they were setting up a big market as we went off to Amsterdam. Saturday night and Sunday day it was back to being a lovely square with lots of bars about. Also a whole street full of restaurants just behind the cathedral. Much nice than the big square in Amsterdam in my opinion.lovely place to sit on a warm day.

I was born and raised here so I might be a bit biased ;) But I love the Haarlem city center. It's a nice place and not as terrible touristic as nearby Amsterdam. Skip Amsterdam and visit cities like Haarlem for a genuine Dutch experience.

Beautiful olden Great Church surrounded with market place and lot of shops and restaurants. Nice to walk and explore the place in better weather as compared to the one I had in the rain and strong wind.
Worth taking 2 hours if you love churches.
