Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

today visited the museum fortress Kijkduinen. very nice if you are interested in history and how napoleon bonaparte contributed to the construction of this fortress and how this fort was used during the second world war. the aquarium is currently under renovation, I found this very unfortunate.

I visited here with my cousins who had been there before but according to them the entire operation has gone downhill. Even though the money isnt there to improve the facilities and maintain it effectively, i still enjoyed the visit. The museum is small but pretty cool because it is in the old fort and is very diverse. The aquarium could have been better but it was nice because they have petting pools and you can feed the animals. There is also a giant whale skeleton in the basement which is pretty impressive. I think that if you are in the area you should visit, but it is not something that you need to go out of your way to see.

Den Helder has a surprising depth of fascinating history. This small museum is a favorite for our little family. We go every time we are in town. It is underground and does get cold in the winter, so be warned. Take your time, as it is small, but a few times we have gone they did have a jumping castle for the kids so you can take your time and read more of the information on the exhibits. It is worth your time.

We did the ticket payment in Dutch. We were not offered an audio tour that seems to exist in English and Dutch.
All explanations are in English snd Dutch while more than half of the visitors spoke German. No information available in German.
General logic of the visit is lacking, it is a haphazard mix of objects without a story line linking them.
The aquarium is a sad place, badly illuminated and too little space for the fish.

This may sound like a weird combination, museum and aquarium, but it is presented wonderfully. A North Sea aquarium, showing what lives in the water, and a museum that presents a magnificent display of what has happened over the centuries near this naval stronghold. A great experience, really recommendable!

Fort Kijkduin was built by Napoleon after the failed Anglo-Russian invasion of North-Holland. It has undergone a few transformations since then, with the lighthouse being removed and rebuilt a little further on the dunes. Different rooms tell different phases of the history, with a focus on the Napoleonic time and world war 2. A wing and machine gun of a Messerschmitt that went down in the IJsselmeer are on display, as well as several other guns and cannons. From the dome cannonfire was guided to its target in WW2. Now it offers an excellent view over the dunes and the sea. One of the three underground tunnels, connecting different parts of the fort, can still be walked through. I've seen better aquariums, but it is a good way to use some of the space in the fort. The skeleton of a sperm whale on display in the basement is quite impressive. The personnel was happy to give me a private guided tour, which was very informative. I thought it particularly informative that a Russian map of Den Helder, from the cold war era, revealed that nuclear war heads were (and possibly still are!) stationed on the east side of Den Helder. I spent about 3 hours in the fort.

My 3 year old enjoyed the aquarium. It's not that big but some nice displays where you can get really close to the fish. The museum looked interesting but all details were in Dutch. It would have been nice if the exhibit details would be in English.

The aquarium was great fun but we were less satisfied with the other part of the museum. We would like to find out the history of the fort since napoleon but it was an unchronological exposition of first and second war items.

I lived in Huisduinen when I was growing up. At the time the facility was qualified as military. Nice to see it open to the public. A lot of money was spend on cleaning up the fort, however needs more money spend to bring it up to scratch. Nice museum. Great views.

I visited this location with my son. We walked all around the grounds and saw all the history that the fort has to offer. There was also a small aquarium on the grounds, and seeing some of the aquatic life that is right next door is also an engaging experince for the kids and adults alike.

I will be going back. I did enjoy walking through the museum portions, and seeing the aqarium built into the fort.
