Neighbourhood: De Pijp
Bustling Albert Cuypstraat serves as the main drag through De Pijp and the location for Albert Cuyp Market, the largest and most famous of Amsterdam’s many outdoor markets. Beyond this sometimes-frantic thoroughfare, tiny lanes beckon urban explorers in search of the latest trends and hidden gems. Nearly half the residents living in De Pijp are foreigners and a good number of them are students. Here you'll find a multitude of ethnic restaurants, great cafes and bars, and a brilliant array of locally owned shops, all catering to a broad range of budgets and tastes.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had never had Surinamese food before, so what a treat! Came here on our food tour, super glad they stopped in. We had sandwiches that kind of reminded me of something like a Bahn Mi, and it was incredible. Such booming flavors. Definitely worth a visit to check out the market and get a bite!

We were recommended Tjin's Toko by a local food guide. we were very curious to try Suriname food as it is not commonly available in Australia. It was not what I was expecting (I was expecting a cafe or restaurant, whereas it is more of a grocery store that also sells prepared food) but the staff were very gracious in guiding us in our choices, the food was tasty and it was a great new experience.

I wish we lived near this place, it’s that good. There’s a variety of ready-to-eat dishes ranging from pasties to mackerel to chicken skewers to steamed buns. Order a variety to share. Their homemade sambals make everything taste even better. The spiced layer cake is a must try. All these super thin layers of moist cake infused with essences of what reminded me of Christmas spices. This is a great place to eat or take away, and very affordable. Inside is also a shop in case you want to buy hard-to-find ingredients. Next time we go to Amsterdam, we’re definitely stopping here again!

Before visiting Tjin's this past week I knew little about the food of Surinam. We were welcomed there during a Hungry Birds tour (highly recommended) and I was overwhelmed with the tastes, especially a chicken sandwich with Javanese chilies in a warm baguette. Heaven. The market itself is pretty unique with everything from Frosted Flakes to hard boiled eggs in an Indonesian curry dish. We went back the next day for another. The best!

Step into a different country, while in the middle of Amsterdam. Tjin's Toko is the place that oozes Surinam, and also Indonesia. It's where the local Dutch go to get their ingredients for cooking true Indonesian and other Asian dishes, a custom that started after the second world war. And also people from Surinam will find the ingredients they need for their favourite dishes. Browse through the narrow isles, packed with items you've maybe never heard of, but also find imported cake mixes and such at a reasonable price. And when you're done, do not leave without picking up a real Surinamese sandwich from the counter in front. It's a treat!

I had no idea how to even say Surinamese before going here. The flavours are fantastic and it's also a little market so if you'd like to try making dishes of your own you can buy here! It was bustling and full of locals getting their lunch when we went. Would totally go again if given the opportunity!

Right within the wonderful Albert Cuyp market area, this wonderful shop/eatery is a must when in Amsterdam.
Only 4 seats, but that's not a problem, you can sit outside while sipping on some of their beers, a rather large collection of international ones, which you can't drink inside.
The sandwiches here are just superb, also the pastries...roll pom, Satay, for less than 10 euros you have a complete meal !!!
All imaginable exotic foods are displayed. Not only Asian but also many American and Mexican stuff.
The service was very friendly despite the many customers, so yeah...be ready to wait in line for a while, but it's totally worth it.

I just walked in front of this store and I noticed it was really crowded and out of experience when a place is like that it's whether they're giving things away or they're selling something really good. In this case it was the 2nd one but i went in and my eyes saw Kellogg's fruit loops and we've been looking to find American products but no luck but in this little paradise they have so many that I didn't know if i was back home or what. So guys, you need American products and prices pretty good considering the distance, go to this store Tjin. You will not regret it.

You can get your lunch, dinner or just a snack here. Everything is really good and freshly made in the kitchen behind the store. There is a lot of choice; for vegatarians, vegans and meatlovers. You can find anything in the store! From American stuff to Mexican food to Asian food! The owners and staff are really helpfull and polite! Love this place!
