Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

To be fair, most of the KNSM island is interesting just architecturally speaking. The IJ side of the island is pretty boring, except for the water views, good for dog walking or running. With the exception of the quay crane B&B, which is kind of funny. When coming up to the end of the Surinamekade, one has a great view of the IJ, and also one can admire the circular affordable housing complex Venetiëhof, part of the Emerald Empire, designed by Jo Coenen. When exiting through the Venetiehof (enter the garden, go straight to the other side), one is confronted by a work of art, kind of like a spindle, or a compass. Go straight and keep left to follow the Levantkade barbeque park at the water side, which is what I did anyway, walk straight on and enter the house boat permanent parking, where one can find many old house boats turned into B&Bs, a dock swimming area, plus one or two nice restaurants. I tried Break Amsterdam (formerly known as Kleine Kaart), and the grilled trout was amazing. Good walking!

With Java island it forms one island with a circumference of about 4 km. The whole area used to be dockland until the end of the 1970s. Thereafter it was occupied by people with alternative lifestyles among them artists. Like so many old docklands in NW Europe e.g. in London, Hamburg and Rotterdam the whole area was converted into residential area.
Today the neighborhood represents a pleasant mix of new and replica architecture, as well as renovated old port buildings. Famous is the Emerald Pearl building at the Eastern tip of the Island (architect Jo Coenen). It has a beautiful pearl shape, though the apartments inside are like triangular pie parts and thus not very functional.
It is costly to rent or buy an apartment here and as a result the Island is mainly inhabited by wealthy urban professionals, the backbone of modern Dutch society. Once as students in the mid 1970s some of them may have distributed leaflets calling for revolt of the dockers working at KNSM... Times have changed.
KNSM (Royal Dutch Steamboat Company) ceased to exist in 1981.

KNSM Island is an Island made by man in the old eastern harbour area of Amsterdam. Since the 90's it is a residential area with some unique buildings, such as "Emerald Empire" round shaped building by the edge of the island. As it's a harbour, you can see a lot of boats. It's not a tourist area actually. Tram 10 ( from Leidseplein) will take you to this area ( stop at Azart plein), or the bus 48 from Central Station ( stop at Azart Plein).

KNSM Island is located in Amsterdam's Oostelijk havengebied (eastern docklands) and was named after the Royal Dutch Steam Company (KNSM) that used to be located here. Passengers used to set sail from here bound for America.
Island boasts striking architecture and artsy boutiques. And Graffiti areas. Believe it's the only place in Amsterdam you can spray paint legally .
Best getting tram to central then tram there.
I got a bit lost on return , ended up in the back end backstreets and it was scary wouldn't advise to do it alone.

This island is a heritage from our colonial past, when ships used to leave to Indonesia. It was only developed into a residential area 20 years ago, before that it was almost derelict for decades.
They have managed to construct a little city by itself. New houses but in style and some are on (newly constructed) canals. Old warehouses, converted to spacious apartments, and large architectural experiments that you cannot miss. And all that on the waterfront of the IJ, and not far from Central Station.
The island is linked to Java Island, with which is forms one island. The style of both are very similar.
