The area
Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

statue

This was a small statue stuck to the side of a building. It really doesn't go with the building and you wouldn't know it was there unless you stopped and looked up.

Just an Architectural Sculpture
Jul 2019 • Solo
This statue is just a an architectural sculpture on the facade of a building on Muntplein. I'm not even sure it's Hercules. I don't remember Hercules fighting any crocodiles.

Easily missed.

It's not really that good a statue,it's easily missed and hard to spot.
The statue shows Hercules stabbing a crocodile,it's easy to walk past but if your on Muntplein it might be interesting to spot but in all honesty there are just so many more interesting and easier to find statues and monuments in Amsterdam.

Is this ugly or what?

I noticed this statue while walking along a canal. It looks primitive, similar to what the Incas and other prehistoric sculptures would look! I wondered what it stands for. Took pictures and continued my walk along the canal.

Tip: Not worth to visit. Save your time admiring more interesting and beautiful attractions of the city.

One of So Many Statues on the Façade
Jun 2017 • Couples
A lot of old buildings in Amsterdam city centre has statues or a gable stone. This building is one of it. It's no worth looking for it.

Hercules, stabbing a crocodile, decorates the facade of what used to be the "De Nederlanden" insurers office building (1894-1895). Inscribed: "ick en maeck v den brant onschaedelyck". Which could mean something like "I will mitigate your fire damage". The connection with the crocodile escapes me however. But ok, it's an old style advertisement, and everyone knows advertising is full of it :)
