It was interesting to learn that this building was moved to this location from it's original place. We always love to see historical landmarks in the places we visit in Europe and to realize how old this building was and to see it's beautiful condition is astounding to us.

The "Accijnstoren" (Accijns = tax, excise) is where merchants, in the old days, paid their taxes on goods brought into a city, in this case by ship. All goods had to be offloaded at this point.
Towers like this were once very prevalent. This one dates back to 1622. It's interesting that the whole tower was moved 12 feet (4 meters) in 1924 to widen the street it's on (Bierkade). It really makes a nice picture. You can go inside. We didn't though.

This attractive building on the canal side is worth looking at, and it also acts as a great visual landmark re finding you way into the city centre. Just turn onto Verdronkenoord and go straight ahead.

The engineers in Alkmaar were pretty awesome way back when in 1924 they rolled this building from its original location to where it is now. The building is in good shape and has nice features at the edge of the roof and the tower on top. People that had to pay dues on goods in the 1700s were probably not so happy with this place. Now the mooring place for private yachts is attached to it. Harmless.

An historical landmark of Alkmaar. We visit it when it was open for the public. Interesting place with a secret history.

It was very noticeable structure by the canal. We passed this by from the place cars are parked. An awesome structure with well crafted tower on the top.
