About
The Gornergrat (3,089 m) is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime. The mountain panorama and the glorious view of the Matterhorn are unforgettable. With its sunny observation platform accessible all year, the Gornergrat, at an altitude of 3,089 m, has been one of Switzerland’s top excursion destinations since 1898. The Gornergrat Bahn was the world’s first fully electrified cog railway. Today it is a modern, eco-friendly railway, equipped with a regenerative braking system that generates electricity on the descent and so saves energy. All year: •Photo subject: 29 mountains above 4,000 m in view (Switzerland, Italy) •Shops •Restaurants: self-service and waiter-served, indoors and out •Large sun terrace •“Bernhard von Aosta” chapel •Panoramic viewing platform Summer: •Wild ibex near the viewing platform of the station •Starting point for hikes •Sunrise trips (bookable offer) •Sunset dinners (bookable offer) •For families: “Wolli and the climate detectives” (audio guides available from Zermatt Tourism and the Gornergrat Bahn cog railway) Winter: •Dining with the stars (bookable offer) •Moonlight visit (bookable offer) •Direct access to the pistes and winter hiking paths •Highest sledging slope in Switzerland (Rotenboden 2815 m - Riffelberg 2582 m) •Igloo village on 2727 m

This is the reason I came to Switzerland
The Cog Train ride up the mountain was in itself amazingly beautiful but it was only a prelude to the sights to be seen. When you arrive at the train station, climb the viewing platforms to get spectacular views of the Gornergrat glacier, Monte Rosa the second highest mountain in Europe, and, of course, the Matterhorn. Wear your sunglasses and put on sunscreen because the thin air makes the sun stronger. This is the one experience that is a must if you visit Switzerland.

Great views of glaciers and Matterhorn. Awesome hike
This is a breathtaking experience and needs to be done. But please don’t repeat our mistake: for family of 5 tickets cost $200 one way because we didn’t know about Swiss Family Pass which you can buy and which would have made the price $100 (50%). Still mad expensive but at least a bit better.

Great ride to the top of Gornergrat with views of Zermatt & the Matterhorn
Great cog/rack railway to the Gornergrat summit. Ticket purchase allows you to hop on & off at the stops - enables walks or hikes within your ability. Great views of Zermatt as you start the ascent. Then amazing views of the Matterhorn as you climb. The top station has a cafe & gift shop (shops closed when we visited) A small church. View points of the peaks, glacier & Matterhorn. Advise to use Swiss pass or Half card to reduce the cost of ticket

Ascend to the Gornergrat and Embrace the Swiss Alps.
A smooth train ride from Zermatt to the top of the Gornergrat carries you to amazing views of the Gornergrat Glacier, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, and a range of alpine vistas. Reasonably priced, the rail journey is a treat and the restaurant on top is a great place to relax and enjoy the views. Take a moment and step into the chapel for a moment of reflection on the early days of conquering the peaks. Tip: Take the train mid-day and you will avoid the morning crowds. Enjoy!

    Great Gornergrat
On a Saga day trip from Lake Orta in Italy we had a great journey by coach, and two ‘cog’ trains up the Gornegrat mountain to the observatory. Although cloud obscured our views of The Matterhorn that day we had a great welcome in the Gornergrat restaurant - very tasty and plentiful food. Then came the excitement of the cog / ratchet train back down the mountain to Zermatt. A lovely day.

Don't forget the surrounding glaciers around the Gornergrat Railway Station!
While the star of the attraction is the Matterhorn, don't forget the glaciers surrounding the Gornergrat train station! They are massive and the sense of scale in person was unfathomable! If the view in the morning is foggy and the forecast says it's sunny, don't panic! It's just clouds moving over and eventually they will burn out in a few hours. Feel free to stay in the area. There are plenty of exhbits in the area including the owlr'd largest chocolate Matterhorn! Swiss forecasts are pretty accurate. But they're very localized in nature and that's how mountain weather simply works.

    Thrilling journey
What a way to end a fabulous day in the mountains. Taking the Gornergrat Bahn from conveniently adjacent to the main Station it was a panoramic excursion. Both ascent and descent. Sitting back and enjoying the all round vistas. Spent a little time at the summit but the main attraction was another great ride back down to base.

    Great Gornergrat
We had already been to Gornergrat in the fall, so we decided to go in the winter. We think it's even more beautiful, as the snow makes the Matterhorn and the mountains even more magical. The trip takes half an hour and the views are very beautiful. Everything was closed or under renovation at the top, so we walked the trails and admired the stunning views. It is a complement to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, be sure to visit it. On the way up and down there are beautiful views of the city and the mountains, so prepare your camera.

    Incredible Masterpiece
Everyone told us to go see the Matterhorn...so we listened, and what an amazing display of nature and God's creation! The peak is over 14,000 feet elevation and we were able to ride the train through the Alps to a point just over 10,000 feet. If you are a skier, the landscape is beyond words beautiful, and if you are just a looker like us, it's soooooh worth the time and effort to get as close as you can... I've seen pictures of it before, but pictures don't do it justice. There are so many beautiful places in this world, and this one is way up there on the list!!

    Spectacular!
The train ride itself was amazing! Best views of the Matterhorn. Up at the top there are a couple shops and restaurants and a church. It is so so beautiful with 360 views. I definitely recommend going on a day with few clouds. This was definitely one of the highlights of our Zermatt trip. Don’t miss it!

Start by taking the Gornergrat Bahn train from the center of Zermatt. If you’ve purchased the Swiss Rail Pass you can get a 50% discount on tickets which makes the ride 40 CHF per person. If you want to get on 15 minutes earlier than other riders you can pay an additional 10 CHF. Sit on the right side of the train for the best Matterhorn views going up. Gornergrat offers by far the best views of the Matterhorn and provides the 360 experience which means you can see glaciers all around which is fabulous. Lots of skiers but also an opportunity for a winter hike or some sledding from the Rottenboden station to the Riffelberg station.

Check the weather conditions before you go (there is a webcam). The view from the top is absolutely stunning. I would recommend at least going for a short hiking tour - I ended up walking all the way down to Zermatt (bring proper hiking shoes - it always amazes me seeing people in slippers trying to crawl down a mountain, even if the trails are well maintained).

The only negative point was the restaurant at the top. We paid 50 CHF for a bland sausage, limp chips and unsalted vegetables. I don't expect fine dining in a place like this but that was bad even for a mountain tourist trap. Bring some fruits and sandwiches instead.

Paying full price this is expensive - luckily we were able to use our Swiss half fare cards and my daughter got a free ticket (special deal, if your birthday was during the lockdown you ride for free). If you're fit enough get a one way ticket and hike back (will take you about three hours).

Great views, but disgusted by the terrible organisation of the train station/train. For CHF118 per person you should not be made to stand for the entire 33 minute train ride, not only that but people standing in the aisles means the 1.5m social distance guidance is not achievable. On top of that we got herded into a waiting area prior to embarking the train, where we were crammed in like sardines. Expected more of a Swiss organisation, extremely disappointed.

You cannot go to Zermatt without taking the train to Gornergrat. I think it’s a bit expensive but if you go at 12.15 to 1.15 you get a 20sfr reduction.
Train journey is fun and of course you get up close and friendly with the Matterhorn.
We were lucky to have a bright sunny day with blue skies.... I guess this is not a normal day.

Loved it and also had a nice lunch at the hotel there.

A must do.

A bit pricey to get there from Zermatt, but the view (both on the way and up at the top) is excellent! One thing that could be better is availability of seating at the only restaurant up there. Once it got busy there wasn’t enough room for all of the people, and it was too cold to eat outside. All in all if you are in Zermatt, I think this is a must!

Sunny skies and was perfect for an outing.
We took the Gornergrat train to go up.
It cost 80 swiss francs each and if you have half abo then its 40 Chf. This is a return ticket and you can hop in and out in each station.
We went to the top which is the Gornergrat station, stayed there for a while.. had a drink then took the train one station down and walk from there to the next station. Its a 45 minute walk and its beautiful because the Matterhorn is so near.
In Gornergrat you can have some take away food because its Covid and restaurant is closed. Theres a souvenir shop and you can stay there for a while just to enjoy the view or ski down. Its a good trip for a day.

This is my second time taking my family up to Gornergrat. The first was in April of 2018 and it was a bluebird day with stunning views. The tickets were expensive ( even with a Swiss half-fare card) but it was ok as the experience was magical.
This trip, June 29, 2023 … not so magical. We left the town of Zermatt and although the weather was looking ok, we checked the Gornergrat webcam several times, some clouds present, yet there was an unexpected rain shower and storm. The tickets seemed to have also gone up in price and were over 200 CHF for my adult kids and over 100 CHF for me and my husband with our half-fare card. We were on the 16:00 train and again, although it was raining, there were no open shops at the top once we got there either in the observatory building or at the station, as everything closes at 16:00. I was surprised by this as the train runs people up the mountain until after 18:00 but there is no one around if you wanted to buy anything or need help. Advice: check the weather several times before booking; only go once if you really want the experience and look for more discounted tickets in advance.
***** the carte journalière does not work for this train

9/10 Could be slightly improved. Firstly, although amazing let’s not kid ourselves this is value for money. 2 return tickets (no railpass) came to CHF 270. We took the 11:30am train up and hit the ‘rush hour’ . Loads of disorganised queuing.. Fortunately we decided to invest a further CHF14 for Priority Boarding which takes you along your own ‘lane’ to a unique waiting area and allows you to get aboard first. They let far too many people on each train which means a good number are standing which I don’t think is great for the price. If you do win the foot race to get a seat then you’ll find they’re not the comfiest!
When you get to the top the view is without doubt worth the hassle.
Great hotel terrace where you can grab a snack and a drink and NOT as overpriced as I thought.
Going back down you’re thrown back into the cattle herding game. This is where you really see the worst side of some elements of the human race..No ‘fast passes’ for the journey back and if you’re unlucky enough NOT to get a seat you’ll find your front leg aching by the time you get to the bottom as the track is so steep in places your balancing leg will know about it.
Overall definitely worth it but you’ll thank me for these tips.
1) Book tickets online - Trains run every 30 mins and you aren’t tied to a departure time. The train stops at 4 stations on journey up and back down.
2) Avoid 11am - 2pm trains (The busy period) if possible.
3) Between above times buy Priority Passes. Trust me, it’s worth the extra.
4) Get seats on the side closest to the station as the views are 10x better.
5) The sun will frazzle you up there. Put on at least factor 50 sun cream - I learnt the hard way.
6) Hat and sunglasses are a must. It’s unbelievably bright up there.
7) Arguably an even better view of The Matterhorn from Rotenboden (from memory) where there’s a hotel with a cafe style buffet where you can grab food and drink and sit outside.

All in all we would recommend but follow my tips for a considerably more enjoyable experience.

Gornergrat offers you great slopes and amazing views. The restaurant by the train station have different kinds of food, its good but you can skii down a bit and you will find some cozy restuarant that have really good food. The view, as I mentioned before is really good, even better when the sun shines and you can enjoy a cup of hot coco outside and look at the other skiers and mountains.

Leave the skiis for a half day and try the sleigh. If you love speed, you're gonna love this!!

8am train so few people on the train and at the top. Views are really spectacular of both the Matterhorn and the glaciers. Man grumpy in cafeteria. Did the walk down to next station. It is rocky and not an easy path. Be careful. It’s longer than the 35 mins that the sign says. But worth it with stunning views. Got the train down to next station and bought snacks at the little shop. The lady at the station was lovely and good to chat to. Beware train at about 2.30 pm is very busy with people standing. Not pleasant with the COVID situation. Masks were worn. Definitely recommend if weather is clear.
