About
The medieval castle above the town of Thun is a striking focal point at the entrance to the Bernese Oberland region. This almost completely preserved symbol of power contains the Knights' Hall, one of the few surviving halls of its type from the Middle Ages. Built at the end of the 12th century by the Dukes of Zahringen as a purely administrative castle, this striking building was extended by its new owners, the Bernese, with its impressive roof in the 15th century. The five floors of the castle now house a historical museum highlighting the region's history, as well as host temporary exhibitions on a variety of cultural, historical and current issues. Concerts and other public events are held in the intact knight's hall. The corner towers of Thun Castle provide an unforgettable view over the city of Thun, Lake Thun and the mountains.

It’s a tremendous edifice on a height. Exhibitions provide a fascinating history, both of it and the city, told around 40 artefacts.

Over numerous floors great rooms are beautifully preserved. Atmospheric with sturdy wooden beams and ladders to ascend and descend, it was an absorbing account.

From the topmost levels enchanting vistas of the lake and cityscapes were delightful. Enhanced by the perfect viewing conditions of superb clarity under cloudless blue skies.

Imposing and beautiful it overlooks the town with its white building and turrets, just like a castle you can see on fairy tale books. It's quite big and honestly more beautiful outside than inside as it is quite empty, but the top of the city view from the turrets is priceless. Its surroundings are amazing and offer some breathtaking panoramic views on the mountains and on the lake

Thun is a cute little town, and visiting the castle was a nice day out of Bern. It took about a half hour to walk through the castle, and the highlight was the grand hall on the top floor. Afterwards, we walked by the town church and the shops & restaurants by the water. It was a nice way to spend half a day.

So much nicer than Iterlaken. 20 min ride on train from Interlaken station, east. Quiet, picturesque, beautiful scenery and no crowds. Interlaken east is crowded and uninteresting..

Great intact castle. We've toured several this age and this is by far the most original we've seen. Views are fantastic too, as are the exhibits. This is a gem find

One of the better preserved medieval castles - lovingly maintained and presented - full marks to the curators. The various parts of the castle tour/exhibits are presented in 3 languages. Thun Castle played an important part in Bernese history, an educational must-see if you are in the area.

The castle of Thun is beautiful and located on a small hill in the absolute center of Thun. Great for a walk, sightseeing, sitting down and enjoy the view. There is even a huge underground garage in the hill with a long elevator that brings you direct on top of the hill.

It was a interesting place to walk through. The history was good and it was laid in a interesting way. There was also some interesting little lizards laying around on the grounds as well, which I enjoyed seeing.

Shloss Thun built in the 12th century is a focal point on the hill. We could see it on the hill from the train station. We walked into town and just kept looking up to see where to find it. We found a staircase that led to the Castle, there are stairs that are uneven and covered for much of the climb. The castle was closed the day we went, but the views were amazing from the top. There is a small church and a courtyard adjacent to the castle. You can see the Aare river from on top.
