Located just down from the Palazzo Ducale is La Botte dei Canonini or the giant wine barrel. Behind a gate we could see a massive and slightly sagging wine barrel. Apparently it could hold 19,000 litres. It had been refilled twice in the 1910’s and...More

I wouldn't particularly trek to the top of the Gubbio just to see Le Botte, but if you're in this part of time it's well worth the photo opportunity. Access is free through the little gift shop. You'll probably never see a bigger barrel.

I have seen photos of this but I wasn't ready for the actual size. I know it's not the largest in the world but at 20 thousand litres it's not too bad, the canons who this was built for must have had a thirst.

This is a one room exhibit that is located inside of a shop. Takes a few mins to visit. Stop in if it's on your way.

When you are walking up the street, lo and behold, there is the reputed largest wine cask in the world behind a grate off the street. It's a fun find.

This is situated on the road heading down from the Palazzo Ducal back to Piazza Grande. It is an impressive example of the art of barrel making and, as well as being able to view it from the street, there is a little souvenir shop...More

Cask of the Canons. Claimed to be the largest Wine barrel in Europe though I recall seeing equally large wooden Casks in Chateau Montrose in the 70's. This was built before 1500 and contains 20,124 litres of wine. Thirsty work being a Canon in those...More

It doesn't seem like much to see, but when you stand in front of this massive barrel you are a bit taken back. Walking through Gubbio and just happened to spot the gates, I'm glad I stopped to peak inside. This is an unfathomably large...More

The wooden barrel intended for keeping the wine of the Canons was built before 1500 and could contain appr. 20,00 liters of wine. It is situated in a small building, so keep your eyes open as easy to miss.
