Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If the city is splendid and there are no bad things to talk about or see, I assure you, however, that by going there for a long time because I am fond of it, the quality of the food in the restaurants in the center has dropped a lot. With a few exceptions, the rest are catering to tourists and prices have increased in some cases by up to 30%. Go to Cortona and eat outside the centre.

Cortona is a very charming small town and this piazza is it centerpiece. I enjoyed seeing the local folks hanging out here and it made for a relaxed and memorable experience. If you have a chance to visit, Cortona is a lovely place.

A square in the center of Cortona. Palazzo del Capitano, famous for its beautiful clock, welcomes you. Slopes stretch out on all four sides, and you can enjoy a walk using this as a landmark. There are tourist information offices and cafes around the square.

We were staying in a hotel San Michele on a street just steps away from the square. Being the center of the town, we were surprised that it was not crowded with tourists. We were visiting in September, the weather was still beautiful and warm.
On one day there was a market with stalls erected in the morning and painstakingly taken down at night. While I would have been interested in browsing, checking out what the Italian nonnas were selling, my husband's patience was running short. Well, I guess we were not meant to buy the old lamp:)
The large steps in the middle of the square offer a resting place , many have their little picnics there, not just tourists, local families gather there too.
There are inviting cafes to sit down and watch the world go by. The locals often seem to be in no hurry and take time to relax with their wine or coffee.
The Italians dress well in general, going out to dinner they put on a nice show. It is really nice to see. Unfortunately it makes it easier to spot the tourists.
Cortona and this square is popular with Americans as it was featured in the American film - Under the Tuscan Sun with the very pretty actress Diane Lane. It put Cortona on the map with the American tourist. Or so we have been told.
Her posters could be seen in the shops' windows.
The popularity of the town after the release of the movie increased dramatically and the real estate prices went through the roof.
So they say....
It may be too late to buy the villa in the countryside :( but it is definitely worth visiting this most charming and friendly little town....Under The Tuscan Sun...
We had a great time here....

This square symbolizes all that is part of the Dolce Vita in Italian Hilltop Towns. Cortona is wonderful and this square is the main centre of City life for the past two millennia. Lots of places to sit and enjoy seeing the locals (and tourists) going back and forth. Good luck and Enjoy!

I loved this piazza! We spent a day in Cortona and my only regret is that we couldn't spend the night and see more of this gem of a place. The wine shops, cafes, shops are nestled closely together and everyone was friendly!

I could sit and people watch all day in the Piazza della Repubblica. And when the town is celebrating a holiday, all kinds of pageantry happens right here

This is the place to be and be seen. Children run around playing tag, young people sit on the steps and text, and the old folks sit on the benches and catch up on the days news. Molesini wine shop as well as their little market are located here as well.

The streets are very steep leading to the Piazza, but it is worth every step! The Piazza has so many shops and restaurants to visit in such a quaint setting. Had the best gelato there!

Hi. Could you please tell me if Piazza Della Republica in Cortona is a pleasant place to spend the night during the winter?
Thank you in advance!
Written 31 May 2018
I have no idea as I have never been there in the winter. If the restaurants are operating, then of course they would be heated. If you were well rugged up then it might be worth a visit. It would depend on the locals. See if you can contact the local tourist office.
