The church of San Filippo Apostolo was the highlight of my week in Syracuse. Apart from being a beautiful church that gives the opportunity of daily mass the church has unexpected treasures of history under the building: over three levels you can see a crypt...More

What a wonderful experience. Others have written all about it so suffice to agree with those who record it as an unmissable experience. Descend the three levels, taking into account the little figures drawn by those searching for safety in the WWII bombings.

There is a fascinating history hidden beneath this church- a short tour we found to be a true highlight of our visit to Ortigia.

Must-See! This is an unforgettable experience descending down to the 3rd level where the mystical blue pool of crystal water purified by rocks exudes an aura of peace and tranquility.

This church offers splendid guided tours of what lies underneath - and is not to be missed, in my humble opinion. First you descend to the crypt, Further down are what appear to be miles of passageways extending in all directions, in which thousands of...More

By donation tour. Highly recommend. Very fascinating . There is a crypt, Greek tunnels and a Jewish ritual bath. I paid 5 euros per person much better than the other ritual bath tour.

We happened upon this church and saw a small group going in plus the open steps going down which are in the main doorway. After enquiring we discovered we could be given a guided tour of the catacombs (1 level below), part of the Greek...More

The church of San Filippo Apostolo is nice, but, not noteworthy. Except for what is underneath. At the entrance to the church is a steep set of stairs which descend three levels below ground. Take the guided tour, which is free, and discover the ancient...More
