The Ducal Palace in Mantua is commonly described as "a city within the city": a labyrinth of more than five hundred rooms, corridors and courtyards, which, together with the gardens, covers an area of over 35.000 meters squared. A truly monumental complex, consisting of buildings...More

I had planned to visit Palazzo Ducale, but due to earthquake damage, there is currently very little to see. I was in Mantua, July 24, 2012 and stopped by Palazzo Ducale. The only areas currently opened are the apartments of Isabella D’este, including the Portico...More

There is a lot to see in this glorious ducal palace. Not all parts were. Open when there, some in am and somein pm. This was a city of great wealth and this is seen in the palace. Signage good, in English as well as...More

Palace is stunning. Much more interesting inside than it looks from outside. After visiting I understand more about cities - states in medieval Italy.

I am not sure what impressed us the most, the architecture of the building, the decorations on the walls and ceilings, or the art, including the collection of porcelain figurines. There was just so much to take in! The signage in English was informative. If...More

You have seen many imitations of Renaissance frescoes on wall and ceilings but this is the absolute real thing, commissioned by the connaisseurs Gonzague in the 1400 s. They also collected Hellénistique sculpture. The coffered ceilings are amazing

The palace is actually an ensemble of several buldings from the 14th to the 17th century. It belonged to the powerful Gonzaga family, Dukes of Mantua. It's a must see in Mantua in order to understand the greatness of Gonzaga family. A History lesson in...More

Due to time constraints (mostly hunger pangs), our party did not dawdle going through the Palazzo Ducale, and it still took us a good 90 minutes. We likely could have learned much more about its history be reading all the informational plaques along the way,...More

Beautiful, enormous palace complex built by the enormously rich and powerful Gonzague family over 5 centuries; We decided to focus on the brilliant frescoes by Andrea Mantegna in the Camera degli Sposi, before visiting the rest of the palace, and are very glad we did!...More

The Ducal Palace complex and St George’s Castle are a series of magnificent buildings. It’s huge and undoubtedly costly and complex for the government to run. Unfortunately this is all too obvious. The first oddity is the ticket office, which mysteriously is not at the...More

Nice castle, great frescos, lots of history about the Gonzaga family. Nice collection of ancient artifacts and right in the center of town. If you visit Mantua, you must go there. Tickets cost 13 Euros.
