The citadel is a defensive structure, it was built by the Visconti family, who were responsible for the power of Bergamo in the years 1332-1428. It is a square-shaped space enclosed by buildings, and is located in the Bergamo Alta. The present Piazza della Cittadella dates back to 1379, it was a courtyard that housed the quarters for the military garrison. The location of the citadel was highly strategic - with the Rocca citadel at the opposite end of the city, it was the city's defensive complex. Piazza Cittadella what was once the court and the parade ground. The square has a cobblestone pavement, and is crossed by an old Roman road . The citadel consisting of several buildings has undergone many changes, becoming the property of the city in the 20th century.

The Citadel is the main legacy left by Visconti rule in Bergamo, which lasted from 1333 to 1428, when the town fell to Venetian Republic.
Begun by Rodolfo Visconti as barracks for the troops , the complex called Hospitium Magnum , has undergone several renovation . The Visconteo Portico with acute arches was restored in 1958.

The piazza is nice and the striking tower of the church above gives it more points. Aside there is an interesting mirror which is nice to take picture there.

Mediveal structure

When you come up to Upper Town by bus, and want to get into the old city, you must pass through the citadel. Today it hosts two museums and hasn't got anymore defensive tasks as in the past.

Beautiful parking in Bergamo..
Oct 2018 • Family
This is a beautiful square in the old city of Bergamo. it is currently used as parking lot, maybe for practical reasons, but it kind of spoil its historic atmosphere of old buildings and cobblestone pavement. The tower under which you enter is actually a bell tower with a clock.
