Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Worth reading up on Ravenna's imperial history before you come, so you appreciate just WHY this is the Arian baptistry, as opposed to the catholic foundations - it's all to do with Goths and Theodoric! It's interesting to be able to spot the subtle, but important, differences in the iconography used in the mosaics.

This baptistery was erected by the Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great between the end of the 5th century and the beginning of the 6th century A.D.

The walls have no decorations, but there are breathtaking mosaics on the cupola (Jesus being baptized by St. John the Baptist), and below a procession of the Apostles, circling the dome.

This baptistery was inscribed with seven other "Early Christian Monuments and Mosaics of Ravenna" buildings as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Entrance tickets can be bought at a vending machine outside the baptistery.

It is found at the back of church in a yard between buildings. This building has sunk into the ground. The mosaic roof is exquisite. The colours so vibrant.

Of the 8 sites in town, I rank this as no 6, but you shouldn't really miss out on anyone of them. However, of the two Battistero's in town, this has the more interesting history, but the least interesting mosaics.

Built by the Arians, thr mosaics it contains are great examples of their depicting Jesus as a human form. But since it was built by this group of somewhat persecuted people, the walls have been mostly stripped bare of everything and it was an outbuilding for the church next door for centuries. The ceiling is about the only reason to visit here and it is spectacular but not necessarily for anyone but the biggest mosaic fans. But it's only a couple of Euro to get in and I do like that the entrance fee really feels like it's going to maintain this UNESCO site that did not seem to get as much foot traffic as the rest, probably due to not being part of the combo ticket.

This is not the easiest of places to find but well worth a visit as less people tend to go to the building.

Nothing much to look at from the outside but the inside is breathtaking. There's not as much gold as San Vitali but you're so close to the mosaics, it's hard not to be incredibly moved when you see them. I was surprised and amazed by how beautiful this was

More wonders in Ravenna - and another very peaceful and contemplative space in Ravenna.

The ceiling is sensational and a fantastic real-life example of Arianism and how important a liturgical dispute this was in the nascent years of Christianity.

This Battistero from the outside was pretty shabby. The area was unkempt and untidy.
OMG inside was stunning. It took my breath away. I’ll never forget it!!
