It was very moving
Oct 2020
It was not easy to find. You have to pay 5 euros to see it because it is behind a screen but there is seating so you can look as carefully as you wish

The terra cotta sculptures are worth the entry fee
Sep 2019
Located on a side street off the main square, the church itself is like the hundreds of others you will see all over Italy. The terra cotta sculptures are amazing and look alive. Those are well worth a visit and the small entry fee.

Lasting images

I entered the church not knowing what was inside. Saw a ticket booth and was intrigued. Very happy I paid the 4€ fee. The terracotta statues surrounding the dead Christ have such strong expressions of the pain felt. They are not to be missed.

Mixed-Feeling Sculpture
Sep 2019
This is a sculpture that for me evoked very mixed feelings. From a purely aesthetic/art side, it is wonderfully executed in wood, the detail is extremely good, and there seems to be something new to see each time you shift perspective as you view. From an emotional side, I could feel the horror and despair of the subjects, even without the religious context for the work.

This is truly a masterpiece, and if you really view or study nothing else in this church, make the time to visit and study for a little bit this masterful carving.

One of the most beautiful renaissance set of sculptures
Aug 2019
Once you enter the church Santa Maria della Vita, you have to go to the box office and purchase the tickets to view this set of remarkable statues: quite rightly so, as Niccolò dell’Arca, allegedly form Dalmatia, created one of the most beautiful sets of sculptures, expressing unbearable pain, almost naturalistic, of those around Christ upon his death, especially Mary magdalene and Madonna. Perhaps the greatest artistic treasures in Bologna an absolute must.

Impressive but...
Aug 2019
This piece of art is located at a corner inside the Santa Maria della Vita church. The church itself it is interesting to see. In order to see this piece of art you have to pay 4 euros otherwise entrance is not allowed. You cannot see it entering the church, you have to go into the cornered little space where a ticket is required. Impressive work indeed but if it was not included at the Welcome Bologna card (which is a card that allows you to see lots of things in Bologna only for 40 euros) I dont think I would have payed the 4 euros to see it.

Beyond a masterpiece
Jun 2019
Entry into the sanctuary is free and there is wonderful art but spend the 4E to see the Lamentation. You don't have to be Christian to enjoy the artistry and skill deployed on the creation of the statues. If you are Christian, regardless of denomination, you will be moved by the emotions displayed by the observers of the dead Christ. The depiction of Crist being prepared for burial is amazing.

Entrance to the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Vita is free but there is a few Euros charge to view the seven sculptures in terracotta of life size. I don’t mind the fee because the art is stunning, among the most beautiful sculpture we have enjoyed in Bologna and besides, all of these churches need support to maintain themselves for posterity. The sculptures include the center piece, the dead Christ, Mary Magdalene, grief-stricken, the Madonna, Saint John, others. We were moved by a deep feeling of poignancy and awe.

Ok church but charge to see sculpture
Mar 2019 • Couples
didn't see this as the fee put us off, the church is free

Go to San Pietro (independance rd)to see a similar sculpture for free. Not worthnthe €2/3 fee.
