- CPaM68Texas780 contributionsHistory in StoneThe tall, round marble column was erected in 113 AD to commemorate Emperor Trajan's military battles and victories. It features detailed and intricate spiral carvings depicting the battles and daily life in ancient Roman times. This has helped provide valuable historical insights on Trajan's military campaigns and achievements during the 2nd century. The column is around 120 feet tall with a diameter of 12 feet and is hollow with a 185-step spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform at the top. A statue of Emperor Trajan was on the top of the column, but it disappeared in the Middle Ages. Pope Sixtus V (1587) had the column re-topped with a bronze figure of St. Peter. Amazing that something this old (near 2,000 years) has survived all of these years. (PaM)Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 February 2024
- Herbert C1,787 contributionsA comic strip storying Trajan’s war exploitsErected in AD 113 to commemorate the Roman Emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars, this freestanding triumphal column is a symbol of the imperial power of the Roman Empire. From a distance, the column looks just like any other ordinary commemorative monument, but look closely and you'll be amazed by the nearly 200 metres long frieze with 2600 intricately carved figures spiralling around the column shaft, creating 155 lively key scenes from the Dacia war campaigns. Rising on a sculptured pedestal to a height of 35 metres, this stone column is crowned with a bronze statue, originally that of Trajan but eventually replaced with St Peter. Unfortunately, you can only admire the monument with a binocular from Via dei Fuori Imperiali as climbing the column to the balcony is not possible for the public. The Trajan's Column has stood firm for more than 1900 years old and remains one of the best preserved monuments left to us from ancient Rome while it continues to tell its stories for posterity.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024

First the Statua di Traiano, then the Mercati di Traiano, then the Foro di Traiano with the Colonna di Traiano (Trajan's Column), a favorite pastime of all artists and sculptors since the Trecento. The column is ~30 m high, composed of 18 huge blocks of Carrara marble, each weighing ~ 40 tons and 4 m in diameter. The complete sculpted frieze is ~ 200 m long. and goes around the column 23 times. It depicts battle scenes about the two victorious campaigns of Emperor Trajan: the first (101-102) is depicted at the bottom of the column, the second (105-106) at the top. This entire marble comic depicts episodes of the war with the Dacians, which, in fact, gave Trajan the funds to build the forum. Gold deposits were discovered in defeated Dacia. Now it is impossible to objectively assess the subtlety of reliefs without optical magnifiers. It was easier for the ancient Romans; there were special balconies in the Greek and Latin libraries (which stood nearby in those days) to look at the column. An interesting fact: in total there are 2500 human figures depicted here, and the emperor is represented as many as 59 times.☝️

It is one of the most fantastic attractions in the city.
Located near Via dei Fori imperiali, it is a bewitching and evocative monument that captures your gaze for a long time.
The bas-reliefs are marvelous.
The protective railing is useful for avoiding direct contact with visitors with less risk to the integrity of the work!

We walked around Piazza del Campidoglio at dusk, enjoyed the view, went down the east stairs to Trajan's Forum, and then visited the illuminated Trajan's Column and Palazzo Valentini.
The breathtaking, fantastical scenery took my mind off things for a while. I recommend visiting at night when the buildings are lit up.

This triumphal column is dedicated to the Emperor Trajan and his victory over two campaigns against the Dacian Kingdom. It dates back to around 113AD and is 35m in height. The Romans finally conquered Dacia in 106AD which is modern day Romania and occupied it for centuries as part of the Roman Empire.

When I applied for a tour to see the Colosseum, the meeting point was under the Trajan's Column. It was easy to find from afar, and it seemed like the perfect place to meet up. The column was built in 113 AD, so it's been almost 2,000 years.

Sei in una piazza aperta con accesso gratuito? O in un'area chiusa e devi pagare l'ingresso?

La columna se ve de modo gratuito, pero hasta donde yo sé, no se puede visitar, aunque en su interior hay una escalera de caracol y se puede acceder al "mirador" de la parte superior.

Are you still able to climb the column?
Written 20 March 2015
There is actually a staircase inside the shaft of 185 steps that lead to the platform. Unfortunately it is closed for visitors.
