It says everything about how crammed with incredible sights Rome is that one of the remarkable things of our trip wasn't even advertised. The Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin is famous for the Bocca della Verita - the mouth of truth. This is an...More

The low rating I'm giving is not for the Bocca della Verita or for the pretty medieval church, but for the fact that they're tricking visitors into paying to see the crypt. When we were there in December, we had already waited in line to...More

Always a queue but no entry charge - donations only. The man in charge was very friendly and such fun. He made visitors feel very welcome even having his photo taken with some visitors. Lovely in the early evening sun, the church and the Bocca...More

Although the temple is stunning the main attraction is across the street at the "Boca Della Verita(The mouth of Truth). It is famous for the scene from the Audrey Hepburn movie, Roman Holiday. You stick you hand in the mouth of the wall mounting and...More

Church interiors, and the art they contain, should be part of any visit to Rome. While most bear ornate later works, this Basilica demonstrates a different kind of beauty. Floor mosaics display intricate geometric patterns throughout, and the walls themselves are fairly plain. Columns (obviously...More

We went to see the Mouth of Truth. It was in the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church. The carving was used in the movie, Roman Holiday, and I thought it would be fun to see it and put my hand inside. The church was lovely,...More

Visiting this church included a phenomenal and unique supernatural experience during our visit in early May. This church has the famous Bocca della Verita and is also the location where St. Valentine's skull has been placed for centuries. It is built on top of an...More

This is a beautiful church that traces back to 700 AD, supposedly built on the foundations of the old Roman altar for Hercules. Pretty cool. It has the famous mouth of Truth...expect a line up. Perhaps bring some purell because thousands of hands are stuck...More

I found this basilica very beautiful - both outside and inside, and mostly because of its bell tower. It is known as Cosmedin - ornate in Greek, as it is, as my pictures show, much ornate. There are ancient wall paintings, a beautiful baldacchinno, and...More

Has some great history. There were basically no lines when we went, though it snowed. St. Valentine's skull is here. Has very old paintings on the upper parts of the nave.

Ridiculously long queue, but if like me you love the film ‘Roman Holiday’ then it’s a must! The church is well worth a visit afterwards.

Just pass by the line of people waiting to take a picture of their hands in the mouth of an ancient sewer cover and enter this very atmospheric church which at the time I was there was celebrating a latin mass.

Contrary to the chaos of the city, the Aventine is
Rome’s oasis. A neighbourhood made up of a patchwork
of ancient churches, hidden gardens, private homes and
embassies, peace and quiet is top priority and the
vibe definitely friends and family. Take a walk around
the Aventine and you’ll find a treasure hunt of
surprises like the clever little keyhole at the
Knights of Malta entrance (the only place you’ll find
