Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Like all roman icon, it gets very very crowded. Took the Underground and the Third Ring tour but buying the tickets online was difficult due to overwhelming demand and their system was overwhelmed. It took over 2 hours to get my 2nd choice of admission. So it is worth it? so I will say this OK experience for first timers

Skip the queues and take this small group tour (we only had 10 people in ours). You get to see the underground of the Colosseum, hear some really interesting commentary from the English speaking guide (through headsets), take amazing photos looking up at the walls and through the arches. The views looking down from level 3 were also spectacular. I am not really into doing tours but this was a wonderful experience.

This is the only way to see the iconic Colosseum. Since they restrict the tour to 25 people, it is not crowded and offers views from underground, on the floor of the Colosseum and from the 3rd level, all areas where it is off limits to the general public. You get to experience the true atmosphere and feel like a true gladiator. It is not elbow to elbow like levels 1 and 2 where the general public is. The views of Rome from the 3rd level are spectacular.

The underground tour visited the portions of the arena below the replaced floor of the arena. An elevator was available for those touring who had walking problems or difficulty with stairs. The guided tour displayed a model of an elevator that lifted gladiators, animals, and scenery up to the arena floor. Forty such elevators were possibly operating to produce the spectacle for the assembled crowd. Four of the elevators were huge to accommodate large scenery or perhaps even elephants. The guide pointed out the water source and drains for what might have been mock sea battles, but that possibility was played down as something only imagined in the very early years of the colosseum. Since the underground was not visible to the crowds, a mixture of materials were used in the underground walls and supports without the need to make them presentable. Lighted only by small oil lamps the underground must have been a torrent of sweaty flesh with up to 1,000 people working beneath the arena to produce the timed entry of fighters and animals into the spectacle of the arena. The tour continued up and out onto the reconstructed floor of the arena and then up into the stands with spectacular views. An elevator was available to take visitors half way up into the stands, but it was necessary to walk back down.

Very much worth the money to see the full extent of the colosseum.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. It was great to see the underside of the colosseum and admire the view from the top. Would definitely recommend.

Scale, size, engineering, inginuity. I struggled to understand the massive moments, feats, and extremely impressive stages that the underground has been responsible for over the years. Simply make the time and effort to undertake this part of the Colosseum

With a 13, 11 and 7 year old in tow, booking this tour was well worth it, kids under 12 are only 2 Euros, and adults are only 14 Euros. I hesitated taking my kids on tours, but this tour got them out of the hot sun (there in August) and all over the Colosseum. Seeing how things worked underground, the streams running under the place, then climbing to the very top for breath taking views was well worth it. There were no headsets, so they had to listen carefully to the guide. She was happy to answer any questions we had and allowed my younger one to go hide out in the shade while we were on the floor of the colosseum.

Magnificient! This is more than I expected. Its architecture is incredible for a 2000 years building. We choose an special guided tour that included visit to the Undergrounds and the Third Ring, which are normally closed to normal visitors (only for a few € more). Highly recommendable

Seeing the Colosseum is a once in a lifetime experience, right!? Soooo why would you not want to take advantage! For only 9 euros extra you can see under the colosseum and go to the 3rd tier for an amazing view! Step out on the wooden platform and actually experience the view of the gladiators. If not, you can still visit the colosseum, but with the masses of other crowds at only 1 level of viewing... Also, this your lets you skip the line which can be brutal. Do this!
Note: the attached picture is only from the 3rd tier. You won't get this view unless you do the tour. Also, the wooden structure that represents the floor of the Colosseum in the picture can only be accessed by the tour.

We debated to do the underground tour as it could work out very pricey but it was worth every penny. We paid to do the full underground tour that gave you access to all areas which we wanted to do as the original €12 tickets for the colosseum was pointless as you was only granted access to 2 levels baring in mind there are 5 levels in the colosseum.
The tour cost us €100 for two tickets for full access of the colosseum plus Palestine hill and Roman forum. We had a lovely lady from Switzerland who gave us so much knowledge about all 3 parts that you would have ever known just visiting it on your own.
The coolest part about the tour was the access to all levels in the colosseum. We had access to the main stage of the colosseum (you walk out into the arena feeling like a gladiator on the same floor they did although they have redone the sand) then onto the underground where the showed you where they kept all the animals in cages and tunnel directly to the gladiator school. The the top 3 tiers where the fans sat including the very top where the slaves sat.
If your interested in the colosseum or like the film gladiator then do the full tour because there is so much or learn. If your not that bothered and just want to look at it then leave then get the cheaper one.

Can I buy a ticket for the underground with no guide? If so does that ticket include free pass to visit the rest of the Colosseum on my own? And if I buy a simple ticket for Colosseum does it include a free pass to visit the under ground? I find the COOP site a bit confusing. Thank you

I want to know prior to purchasing tickets the meaning of of this. For ticket with scheduled entrance time for groups or individuals - weekly "COLOSSEUM - TICKET RESERVATION WITH SCHEDULED ENTRANCE TIME - WEEKLY AVAILABILITY"
Does this means that I can purchase these tickets and go on a scheduled date or what?

When I checked the Trip Advisor site there was a colosseum tour with great ratings for $38.02 per person, but I'm not sure it included the underground portion of the structure. Being retired military, we booked our tour through the Roma USO which offered both the colosseum tour and the underground tour. I would recommend checking with Trip Advisor to see if the offered Trip Advisor tour includes the underground. Our tour guide for that tour was Mario Bernardi and he was wonderful - very experienced, and he added detail to the dialogue and explanations provided by the Colosseum tour guide. You could contact Mario Bernardi directly, since he does provide private tours in Rome - he has a page on the internet and can provide detail on the options for touring during your visit.

Hi, can you buy tickets on the day to see the underground area or can you only see it if you pre book?

How to book it please? But it seems nobody gets an answer to that question?

Getting information on tours in Rome can be trying and rather than be disappointed with a bad or mediocre tour I'd recommend contacting Mario Bernardi at "Viator Private Tour Guides". We used Mario as a private guide to get us through the Colosseum (both underground and main portions). A guide from the company with the Colosseum contract led the tour, but Mario added to the information. We then continued with Mario for the Palantine Hill and the Forum. I'm sure Mario could help you navigate the ticket buying and scheduling thickets prior to your arrival or at least let you know what was available. It also appears Mario is on Facebook. For options I recommend typing "Mario Bernardi Rome Italy" into your browser and search the various websites for your preference.

How come I cannot find Pierecci's Tours website? It seems the Official tickets on coop culture website for the Colosseum are sold out for the dates I want in October. so I am wanting to see if this Pierrecci's site has tickets for an underground tour available.

How did you book the underground tour. We are travelling to Rome tomorrow. I have tried to book it on the COOPculture official Colosseum site, but it keeps crashing.
Also, how much was it?
