About
The Arch of Constantine, built on the route followed by the triumphal processions, in the stretch between the Circus Maximus and the Arch of Titus, is the largest honorary arch that has come down to us. It is a synthesis of Constantine’s ideological propaganda. The arch celebrates the triumph of the emperor Constantine over Maxentius on October 28, 312 AD following the battle at the Milvian Bridge. The inscription on the central vault tells us that the monument was solemnly dedicated by the Senate to the emperor in memory of that triumph and on the occasion of the empire’s decennalia, at the start of the tenth year of his reign, on July 25, 315 AD.

    Historic Architecture!
Our tour guide walked us around this amazing Archway next to the Colosseum! It was incredible to see how much of this structure is standing after all the time that has passed? Must take a selfie & add it to your memory book!

    Ancient Arch is impressive
This Arch commemorates the victories of Emperor Constantine. He was the last great ruler of the Roman Empire. The Arch is 21 meters (69 feet) tall. It's near the Forum and the Colosseum in the center of Rome. The Arch is intact and impressive.

    Overshadowed by the nearby Colosseum
It's a shame that the Arch of Constantine is located within a stone's throw from the mighty Colosseum, which certainly takes all the limelight away from this ancient Roman arch. Once standing on Rome's triumphal route and still proudly the largest surviving Imperial Rome's arch, it is now standing in isolation in front of the Colosseum, fenced off from the public but sharing the same open area as the Colosseum's ticket office and entrance. Dedicated in AD 315 to commemorate Constantine's military victory over the tyrant Maxentius, this arch has inspired many other triumphal arches, including the more famous and impressive Arc de Triomphe in Paris. At 21 meter high, this majestic marble arch has 3 separate arches and 8 sculpted panels depicting military and civil scenes from the days of Emperor Constantine. Good for a quick stopover to appreciate and admire its intricacies as you await your timed entry into the Colosseum.

One of the world's greatest triumphant arch structures
The Arch of Constantine sits just outside Colosseo near the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Built in 315 AD to celebrate Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge 3 years earlier, it is 21 metres in height and 26 metres in length. This triumphant arch structure features statue topped columns, medallions and reliefs of battle scenes. Unfortunately, the Arch of Constantine is surrounded by a gate but you can still get rather close to this historic structure. Have a look while sightseeing in area. From some vantage points you can take pictures of both the Arch of Constantine and Colosseum.

Built in 315 and marks Constantine’s defeat of Maxentius three years earlier. Found directly next to the Colosseum. As with all arches erected by the Romans, it is brilliantly detailed and inscriptions can be seen on the upper section.

This arch was built in honor of Constantine, to commemorate a victory. Constantine did not build the arch. Our guide said at one time there were at least 36 commemorative arches, but now very few survive. Great views from the Coliseum, but you have to pay for that view.

Literally within the shadow of the neighbouring coliseum is another of Rome’s must visit attractions, the Arco di Constantino, the Arch of Constantine. Located just to the north of the larger attraction, nestled between it and the Palatine Hills it is easy to access while visiting one or the other or both of these sites.

The arch was commissioned in 312 AD by the Roman senate to commemorate Constantine’s victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge that year. Construction of the 21 metre (69 feet) high 26 metre (85 feet) wide arch took three years.

The arch is constructed of concrete bricks faced with marble. At completion it was the largest triumphal Arch in the Roman Empire. Its location at the base of the Palatine Hills was due to the fact that this was the ancient triumphal route into the city.

The arch was constructed taking advantage of several differing styles and includes numerous detailed sculptures of earlier triumphs and Roman leaders. Sadly, during our visit in October 2024 about half of this was covered by protective scaffolding as part of the repair plan due to end in 2025. What remains though is very much worth looking at in some detail.

The arch apparently was the inspiration for other arches in later years including the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in 1836 and the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona completed in 1888.

Getting to the Arch is quite easy. Th regular HOHO Bus includes the Coliseum as one of its stops and the arch as noted is literally beside it. There are several bus stops serviced by various routes in the immediate vicinity and the Coliseum Metro (subway) stop is a short walk away.

The Arch of Constantine (Italian: Arco di Costantino) is a triumphal arch in Rome dedicated to the emperor Constantine the Great. The arch was commissioned by the Roman Senate to commemorate Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in AD 312. Situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill, the arch spans the Via Triumphalis, the route taken by victorious military leaders when they entered the city in a triumphal procession. Dedicated in 315, it is the largest Roman triumphal arch, with overall dimensions of 21 m (69 ft) high, 25.9 m (85 ft) wide and 7.4 m (24 ft) deep. It has three bays, the central one being 11.5 m (38 ft) high and 6.5 m (21 ft) wide and the laterals 7.4 m (24 ft) by 3.4 m (11 ft) each. The arch is constructed of brick-faced concrete covered in marble.Nice place to take some great pictures with your friends

The largest triumphal arch in Rome, the largest still standing. Located between the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. Just please don't pass him by without even looking at him. The arch is a wonderful remnant of ancient Rome, it is highly decorated and you can really spend a long time looking at it, appreciating all the details.

You can see it side by side with the Colosseum. The Arch of Constantine is said to be the model for the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. I was impressed by how well it has survived given its long history. There is no admission fee to see this gate, so you can take your time looking around from the front and back.
