It’s a shame this train service is so poor. It’s a very convenient way of getting to Pompeii, but the timetable is fiction and the train is hot and very overcrowded. Reflects badly on one of the Italy’s top tourist sites.

Cheap travel yes, if you don’t mind being herded like cattle. We used it to travel from Sorrento to Pompeii. Recommend signin up for the guided tour at Sorrento to avoid the entry queues at Pompei.

I was abit concerned about using Circumvesuviana after reading some of the comments. I didn't have any problems and found it great. You just need to be aware of your surroundings. Use it! It's very cheap and you can get to some great places.

There are so many reviews of the train service that are poor, but the cost of travelling is so cheap compared with London prices and no more crowded than the London Underground during rush hour. It is busy, it is dirty and you do have...More

The local Circumvesuviana train is an easy and inexpensive way to get to the sites of the archeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum from Naples and Sorrento. The graffiti-covered trains are far from comfortable. While some are newer, most are old. They can be hot...More

Run down, no air conditioning, poor signage at stations, dirty, pickpockets lurking around. Really just disgusting on all accounts. Unfortunately it’s the only feasible mode of transportation to Herculaneum/Ercolana and Pompeii from Naples/Napoli. We took the boat or Metro or Funicular as well and they...More

Very busy and dirty but it is the best way to get to Herculaneum . You need to be on your guard for pick pockets. Some of the station name are covered in graffiti and hard to read

Well, it sure ain’t fancy! The trains and all stations have been attacked with graffiti and are often not on schedule. We had one train that was early but the majority ran late. If you can bear it, it is a very cheap way to...More

We used many trains on our trip around Italy, but the Circumvesuviana was the only one where we felt very uncomfortable. We had been previously told that Naples would not be the cleanest city we would visit. We would now agree with that assessment if...More

I'm tempted to say my advice is 'don't use it', but the Circumvesuviana is the easiest way to get to Pompeii, Herculanium and Vesuvius itself, so like us you will probably find yourself travelling on it from Naples or Sorrento to these places. I am...More

I very much appreciated your recent review of the Circumvesuviana train. Like you, we have heard and read the horror stories of filthy conditions and rampant pickpockets, so it was nice to see a review which dispelled much of those fears. We are traveling from Naples to Sorrnto in October and plan to take the Circumvesuviana with our luggage. Once in Sorrento, we plan to use the train again (without luggage) to make a day trip back to Naples to visit the archaeological museum there, and on another day to go to and from Pompeii. I am wondering if you happened to visit the Naples museum and whether or not you used the Naples city Metro to go to and from. If so, can you share what that journey was like? Also, do you know of anyone who boarded the Circumvesuviana train at Porta Nolana rather than at Garibaldi? We are pondering a walk to Porta Nolana in order to improve our chances of getting seats on the train, but the neighborhood around Porta Nolana appears dodgy and unsafe, at least judging from the picture we see on Google Maps. Thanks for any information you can share! Bill McLoughlin in Columbus, Ohio, USA

We haven't used the Porta Nolana station. I'd be surprised if it's any worse than the underground at Napoli Centrale, however. We haven't been to the museum or taken the metro. I didn't even know they had a metro! :) The... More
