About
The church of Monteoliveto, or Sant'Anna dei Lombardi, is known for the quantity and quality of Renaissance artworks it hosts, such as those by Tuscans Benedetto da Maiano and Antonio Rossellino that together with famous frescos by Giorgio Vasari in the Sagrestia Vecchia make the Church one of the most relevant examples of Tuscan Renaissance in Naples. It’s also important to mention the Compianto sul Cristo Morto, a sculptural group by Guido Mazzoni from Modena. Guided Tours of the Museum are organized by the Social Cooperative ParteNeapolis.

We were mistakenly drawn to this church by the promise of a (and I quote) ''life size presepe''. What we found was much better: the presepe turned out to be a statuesque group made out of terracotta, by the author Giuseppe Mazzoni, depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ. The statues are so lifelike, you're always half expecting them to start batting their eyelashes or whisper something. Mary Magdalene was particularly striking: her facial expressiveness, the carefully curate details in her dress, her hair, she literally speaks to you of her grief and pain. The piece de resistance, though, is definitely the Chapel frescoed by Vasari: an intricate, quiet beauty, perfectly preseverd, truly a small Sistine Chapel! Absolutely a must if you're in Naples, even for a few days.

We knew nothing about the church but were introduced to it by a couple of young stuff members that were promoting it outside. The church seems pretty forgettable until you reach the last chapel, a beauty all covered in frescoes by Giorgio Vasari, the illustrious tuscan artist from 1500s. Worth the visit.

Also known as Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, but not sure why they called it this name....
Anyway, this church was built in 1411 and restored after World War II. It is a repository of Renaissance art. Entering, past the tomb (1627) of Domenico Fontana (who completed the dome of St Peter’s in Rome after Michelangelo’s death), the
richness of the interior unfolds.

We really liked the whole complex, Vasari’s frescoes are truly breathtaking and visiting the hypogeum is really worth it - and it comes with the guide who explains the meaning of the place. Our guide was really nice and helpful. Definitely a place to visit while in Naples.

Do you want to see Michelangelo in Naples??
Here he is: a Putto made by the Young Michelangelo, 15 years old, is in this Museum.
It seems like a little David.
Also Giorgio Vasari masterpiece is here.
It's a must to see

Wonderful place with amazing examples of Italian Renaissance art.
The Vasari’s sacristy will leave you breathless ! The full visit require a paying admission ticket, very cheap. this place is still outside of the main tourist routes, but I think it will increase the visits.

Beautiful old sacristy which has intact frescos like the sistine chapel in vatican. Also nice to discover a putty made by 14 yr Michel Angelo. The crypt has an interesting story of the process of burial of munks.

Really interesting Church with helpful and knowledgeable guides. Crypt is a little morbid with its collection of skulls in jars, but quite fascinating nevertheless. Look out for the Michelangelo cherub, carved when he was 14 years old.

We found this quite by chance taking a shortcut to Spaccanapoli. We having been coming to Naples for 10 years or more and had never noticed it.
The church itself is well worth a visit, but the highlight has to be the side chapel completely covered in frescos by Vasari, and artist whose work is very rarely seen and who gives his older contemporary Michelangelo a good run for his money here.
Proof that Vasari deserves to be known for his own work as much as for his famous book on other artists.

I stumbled upon this church while walking near the center of town, and I am glad I did. It was quite beautiful and filled with frescoes and artwork throughout. Each side of the church appears to be divided into little chapels, each containing lovely displays and artwork.
I spoke with a gentleman while visiting there - I believe he was a guide employed by the church. He informed me that the church was a monastery until the 1700's when Napoleon closed all of the monasteries in Naples.
I enjoyed visiting; it's a "must see" in Naples if you are interested in churches and/or artwork. Beautiful!
