    Worth a look
It's dirty, it's crowded, it's a rip-off but you need to experience it. Even in October, it is hot and tourists and locals are everywhere!! Lots of places to eat but beware as cafe owners see tourists coming a mile away and conveniently up their prices.

Arrive hungry as there is so much food on offer
Thousands of shops, cafes, food stalls all crammed into ancient streets so that all your senses are immersed in the environment. Local shops selling seafood and vegetables are side by side with souvenirs for tourists and everything you could ever need to buy. Take time to look up, and above the shops and stalls are ancient churches and monuments to remind you how long these market streets have been around. The monuments above the shops are a great way to prevent getting lost as there are so many routes to choose.

Main promenade in historic centre of Naples
We were introduced to Spaccanapoli by our walking tour guide. It is the straight and narrow main street tin the old historic centre of Naples. It is the main promenade for tourists and provides access to numerous sights in the area. Its an extremely busy area and a very lively and interesting area to explore. We enjoyed the mixed seafood cones on one occasion and some delicious street food pizzas on another. Its a must experience street.

    Hectic Street in Historic Center
This is the street that divides Naples north and south. It's a straight street that changes names multiple times and you will pass many churches, restaurants, shops, and lots of crowds. Wear a money belt and leave your valuables at home so that you don't have to worry about pickpockets.

Rough and gritty but fun to explore with other tourists
You may love it or you may hate it, but Spaccanapoli is a unique experience in Naples. I was apprehensive after reading all the stories about narrow streets, purse snatchers on motocycles, and high unemployment rate in Naples. But after taking precaution with my valuables, the place wasn't as bad as one would imagine especially with so many tourists - there is strength in numbers. Besides many of the great churches in Naples are located within a block of Spaccanapoli.

Naples is an experience. There are some lovely buildings and squares but much of It is overloaded with rubbish and graffiti. It is a central location for sites. We had an Airbnb in 'the historic quarter' however we didn't bargain for our safety. It is a pleasure to walk along the main narrow streets along with many other people in the day time. Just a street off that at 18.15 hours we had 2 different people approach us in an unnerving manner. We realised that as no public transport was operating in the early hours of the morning we would need a taxi. Taxis could only come to a corner near to us and we wanted to walk there quickly and get straight in to a taxi, not wait around. It was unerving with the people on the streets but fortunately we had pre-booked a private transfer with World Travel Naples and they were there. What a relief. Lesson learnt-will not be staying in those type of areas again.

Avoid this place like the plague. In fact, avoid Naples as a whole.

This is a city that despises tourists, graffiti everywhere saying “tourists go home”. I’m unsure as to whether this is an insult, or advice to not bother with this place.

‘Spacanappoli’ is horrendous. The shops are all the same:
- Tourist trap rip off
- Souvenirs
- Tourist trap
And so on.

The same can be said for the majority of streets in Naples, all the shops are repeated selling the exact same things, all with extremely rude owners and locals alike. I’ve never felt more unwelcome in any city I’ve visited. This city and its people should be thankful for the amount of money tourists bring in.

Don’t believe all of the hype and fancy pictures you see, they do not paint a true picture. Rubbish bags, overflowing bins, vehicle fumes and rude locals make you want to get off the streets anywhere you can. The Instagram photos don’t show the churches & Basilicas surrounded by rough sleepers and mountains of rubbish.

We went past one shop selling fake SSC Napoli gear, with its owner stood smoking inside the shop entrance… who wants a new t-shirt smelling of smoke? Another shop served us quite possibly the worst coffee I have ever seen, in a plastic cup no less… in a city which is famed (for some reason) for its coffee. Each coffee we had in Naples was bang average, nothing compared to what we’ve tried elsewhere.

The only decent part of Naples is some of its churches… as can be said for any city in Italy so it’s nothing to write home about. It’s nice to go in to a church and get away from the piles of rubbish and clouds of smoke in the streets.

We did have a lovely pizza at Da Michele to be fair, but that alone is not a reason anyone should go to Naples.

We were supposed to be there for 2 nights, we didn’t even manage 24 hours. After the first day we had seen enough, taken enough dirty looks and rudeness from locals. We booked a coach back to Rome to escape this hell hole of a city.

To conclude, Naples is a city which is very much ‘expectation vs reality’. Of all the places you could visit in Italy I would avoid Naples at all costs. The locals don’t want you there and they make that very clear. Don’t waste your time and money on this absolute armpit of a city.

Hustle and bustle - lots to see, smell and hear. Narrow streets, shops including jewellery, souvenirs, shoes, bags, fruit & veg, fish and seafood and much more.
